Bound to Happen
May. 5th, 2002 08:42 pmI first launched my website more than 7 years ago. There was a time, in March of 2000 when I was getting about 1,500 hits a day (it was just before the Kingdome implosion and my site was mentioned in Sports Illustrated). Now I get about 150-200 a day.
I've had a guest book on the site since about the beginning. Until this past week, I'd never had an entry that I needed to remove. Last week someone put about 5 entries of fuck you (in all caps, thank you). No biggie. I just deleted them. But today I found he had been back (and yeah, it could be a she and it could be more than one... but I doubt both) and this time left about a dozen entries calling me a bitch and again suggesting some fornication.
It's not really that big a deal, I just think it's interesting that it's not happened before and until last week, I never even thought about it. I used to have my phone number (which is listed in the Seattle directory under my full name - no secret) on the site (it's actually still there, now that I think about it, on my resume) and did get some strange phone calls from people who had been to the site and just wanted to chat.
My address has also been there since forever (snail and email). I used to get a fair number of emails from guys telling me that listing my address was dangerous. Then I put a notice next to my address telling any other guys not to send me these notes. They don't any more. And I still get a couple of post cards a year from wonderful places from people who had been to the site and just thought they would send me a card. It's always such fun to get them.
After the earthquake I even got a coffee mug from a woman in New Zealand who sent a note with it explaining that she was sorry to see the pictures of all my broken mugs.
My website has brought me far more joy and far more friends than anything else. So a few guest book entries (easily obliterated) in 7 years is a tiny price to pay.
