When I got a note from someone at Ravelry asking if she could add my goldfish knitting pattern to the Ravelry database, I figured that was as good an excuse as any to fix it up right.

The photos were never very good. The design of the page is a mess. And I've improved on some of the details of the how-to. But, mostly now I have a better tail fin that is very different (and probably easier to do for most).

So... this morning work was slow and I got on the stick. It is a major bother to knit for instructions. I am not a careful knitter. Especially when knitting something that does not need to fit. If the pattern says to increase every other row and I miss a row because something on TV was interesting, I just leave it wrong and call it a design improvement. If I discover I have one stitch or two too many or not enough I add or delete as needed whenever. As long as the bear or the fish looks like a bear or a fish, I am so not worried about the details.

But, when you are writing out instructions, it can't be nice to be so casual about the ingredients. So I am paying careful attention and counting madly at every turn and then stopping to photograph every detail. I'm making two fish at one time - one with the old tail and one with the new.

It's slow going but I'll get there and the pattern will be fine.

When I'm done the new one will replace this one: http://www.susandennis.org/knitting/goldfish.htm

And, while I'm thinking about it, several of you have asked in various ways and with varying degrees of desperation if I would sell you a bear or a fish. It's so nice and so flattery but I really and truly do not want to get into that business. I think, however, I have found a creative solution!

You could post a request on the Etsy Alchemy board! It's a place to request hand made items. You describe what you want, and people bid on the opportunity to make it for you. You could give them the link for the fish or, if you want the bear, you could send them to http://www.susandennis.org/knitting where they can find information about the pattern and pictures.

I'll bet there are Etsy artists who would love to knit either one of these and sell them.

Erm. Are you sure you want to let people knit your design for money?

That's what you're saying when you say that you'll allow people on Alchemy to use your pattern to sell fishies.

That's your copyright. Be careful with it?

*grin*

I gave a copy of the original instructions to a friend in London, by the way, and she was delighted with them!

If you're okay with it, there's no downside. I'm a professional knitting designer, so my view of it is different - often, my designs have been the only thing I have to sell, so I'm careful with them.

You might want to specify that anyone selling knitted items made from your design do give you credit for designing it, but other than that, if you're happy for them to use it, then I'm happy that you're happy.

You're not missing anything; I'm just looking at it from a different perspective.

Excellent - I'm glad that you're so happy to share! I love being able to knit the many free patterns out there, and having your fishie one added is just sugar on top.

Two points. It's a lovely thing to share the pattern with everyone with no restrictions. And since you're okay with letting folks use your pattern to make items for sale, you might just want to add that on your instructions somewhere, or you may get a bunch of emails asking about it.

And, yay! What a compliment to be asked to allow the pattern to be added to the database. :)
