Wit Mates - Keeping the Iron in Irony...
Jun. 15th, 2003 08:42 amSoul mates - seeking, finding, enjoying - is popular concept. I've never really had any interest in it. But, wit mates... different story.
I'm lucky enough to have two people in my life who bring out the best in bon mots in me. When I talk to either of them, we sound like a Neil Simon play or Aaron Sorkin tv script. Witting and funny and clever. I'm always as amazed and shocked and tickled by what comes out of my mouth as what comes out of theirs.
Both these people are named John, except one of them lost the h. I've known Jon for more than 20 years. I met him the same week he met the partner, Page, he has been with ever since. He and Page now live in LA. I can go years without seeing or talking to Jon and never miss a single beat. Page loves to hear us take on current events, current culture or even 'remember whens'.
I just discovered today that I have no photo of Jon. I must rectify this...'
I met John when we both worked in Rochester, Minnesota. I really thought he was a pompous asshole. As it turns out, he really is but a wonderful, clever, generous, hilarious pompous asshole. He now lives mostly in San Jose, CA but is rarely there.

John and me in Wellington, NZ in 1996. He's as great a traveler as I am not but he's fun to go with.
For a lot of years we spent Christmas together. We had a favorite restaurant for dinner and we'd spend the rest of the time in movies. He loves to go with me to baseball games. He knows nothing about the game at all - even after all the games we've been to. But there is something that tickles him.
Last night he called 3 times. The first time was as he arrived at the stadium for a San Jose Giants (single A team) game. When I lived in San Jose, I was a season ticket holder and John came along when he was in town. Last night he called back after he failed to when the 3rd inning Lucky Number Mega Cash Giveaway. And once more in the 8th inning to describe in not too accurate detail what was happening.
I might not hear from him for another 6 months or a year but when I do it will be fun and ironic and witty. I'm so lucky to have them both. They make a better me than I could make on my own.

A nice Sunday
Jun. 15th, 2003 03:00 pmI'm now on my second Netflix selection du jour. The Guru was kind of fun - although I was just a bit uncomfortable with the sterotypes... oddly more uncomfortable of the fun they were making of ethic groups than of rich white people so I guess that's ok...
Now I'm in the middle of Catch Me if You Can.
I had to pause to answer email. My brother is at my Mom's checking on her. This is more humorous than you might imagine. My brother has a heart of gold and a brain of mush. He has gone out of his way to go check on Mom this weekend. He lives in Jacksonville, FL and has gone to see her on the way to Atlanta for a concert. Don't get out your maps. It is not on the way, he is just being a very good guy.
But, the funny part is that he and Mom are on about the same level these days. Since Daddy died, she's lost a lot of brain function because of all her little strokes. And the even funnier part is that my bother was the first one to point out that finally he can keep up with her.
Anyway, they are fumbling along through the weekend together. While I think she's misplaced more marbles recently, he doesn't really think so. And he's probably more right than I am.
But, they are both emailing with questions and reports and general stuff and it's pretty amusing. The Mariners game is on ESPN and she really wants to watch it. My brother is not a baseball fan so the latest note is that she has a shopping list for him and he promises to leave the house with the first pitch. Watch out Walmart!
