I remember trying to explain holidays like President's Day to my friend from New Zealand. Finally I was able to do it by describing what was open and what was not. Then he said "oh, so it's kind of a faux holiday".

Then I got my hands on a Kiwi calendar and learned they invented the sport. If the queen farts, they take the day off while declaring that she's nobody's ruler especially theirs but. what. ever.

It's a work day for me but a weird one. Instead of having me work according to what needs done, now the project manager has assigned hours. So on Mondays, the workday is 9-5. I work Mondays, so my work day does not start for 15 minutes. Because of database issues, I suspect there will not be much to do after about 10 so basically, I'll be paid for sticking by the computer all day which is what... hmmm.... I would probably do if I weren't being paid. This job is wonderfully weird.

On Tuesdays, the hours are 6 am to 2 pm. On Wednesdays, when my co-worker has the duty, she'll be working 6-10 and 2-4. Thursdays and Fridays are back to 9-5.

Then next week, I will probably break off and start the new project. I have notes to refer to in order to keep all this straight.

I just added a few new friends to my LJ friends list to perk up my /friends page view. I pick at random to add and often just as randomly to delete. I tend to write a lot about not much of anything so if you are thinking about maybe adding me to your friends list, feel free to delete me if it gets too much.

[livejournal.com profile] joyce talked me into (ok, made a suggestion in a tweet) to making faux barbecue in the crock pot. Barbecue, to me, starts with beer while you watch guys dig a fire pit and ends two days later when the meat is ready to come off the smoker... hence the snarky faux. But, I digress. Anyway, I chopped and then tossed everything into the crock pot and had the result for dinner on Saturday. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't that good either.

But, rather than just toss the rest, I thought I'd get it cold first. Today, I hollowed out a roll, buttered and lightly toasted it, filled it with the stuff and topped it with cheese for another trip under the broiler and, damn, if the end result wasn't just quite tasty!

My lunch fare has been sub par recently and this is a lovely little surprise.

Mr. Blue is shaping up nicely. He needs another arm and some ears but soon...

It's really pretty darned chilly here today. But I think this is the first day this winter that I have had on two shirts and a sweater. I think I'm going to fire up the fireplace after I send this note.

I'm staring at the desktop widget that says it's 42 degrees here and 81 degrees at my brother's in Texas. While I think it is actually colder than 42 degrees here, I sure would rather have that than 81!!

---

The Irritating one just called me. We've been swapping emails all day because I needed a particular piece of information and she was not understanding (or possibly pretending to not understand) so she called. It was one of the uglier phone conversations I have ever had. I am not proud that I let it get that ugly. I actually sent her an email saying that I was sorry I lost my temper. I am. I should be able to maintain civility no matter how stupid and insulting she is. I didn't and I'm not happy with me.

On the up side, I'm willing to lay major bucks down on bet that she never calls me again.

I created my first website in 1994 but I didn't slap up susandennis.com until about 1996, I think. At the time, domain names were free but hosting was pretty expensive and hosting space was dear. In the early years, hosting companies came and went (sometimes taking your website down with no notice or recovery at all. I actually created two more websites susandennis.org and susandennis.net because it was cheaper to have 3 small sites than one big one. And I put most of my images over on karolene.com. Plus spreading out the wealth meant that if part of the site died with a hosting company, other parts would still live on and resurrection could be done more quickly. It was the wild west.

Then things got steadier and hosting companies got more sophisticated. And prices started dropping.

I still have 4 domains at 3 different domains. I've not made a change to any of them in at least 5 years. Registration is held by yet a different company. The entire cost - registration and hosting - is $150. Which is about what my first website cost me for 50MB of storage.

Tonight I got an email from the company that hosts two of the 4 websites. The email was to let me know that each site has had its capacity expanded to 10,240MB. No extra costs. The third site (another hosting company) has room for 350MB. (I actually could consolidate all 4 domains in one of the hosting spaces now and have lots of room for growth. I probably will do that as each comes up for renewal.)

Plus, I have lots of free space on Drop Box and Mesh. I got so much room in the cloud for shit, I could make it brown!
