A nice day so far!
May. 31st, 2021 11:27 amMy pool reservation was for 8 when the gym opened. I went a different way and wound up there at 7:30! The new way is shorter and in many ways easier but there are several ways I can screw it up and turn wrong so it's a little stressful. But, once I've done it enough, I think it will be fine.
There is signage along the way indicating that there are often huge backups. There is a set of 3 driveways in the middle of nowhere - a mile from any intersection - that have signs saying DO NOT BLOCK. It must just be miserable during high traffic times. Happily, I can do my own scheduling and basically am doing a reverse commute anyway.
In the olden days when I used to go every day, there was a little group of us who were there every single morning waiting for the gym to open. We were a tight bunch of weirdos. The jock, the muscle-y tech guy, the old dude, the basketball player, Matt, the blind swimmer.. plus some now-and-agains - the teacher, the florist... I started every day with these people. With the exception of Matt, I did not know any of their names and they did not know mine. But we were tight.
This morning, one of the people waiting for the doors to open was the muscle-y tech guy! It was great to see him. He said he had wondered about me and knew that the bridge was likely keeping me away. He said most of the old group is back and he said he'd say hi for me tomorrow. So fun to see old friends.
My swim was the best one yet. It was really nice to have Spotify music in my ears - good move getting that back. And those shade trees just make it such a nicer place to swim. I sway until my arms were sore. I kept going for a couple more laps and then thought "this is stupid, what if I do some kind of damage and can't knit or swim??" so I stopped. Turned out I was out of time anyway. 59 mins. Okdokey!
I stopped at the front desk and asked about the pool schedule. The nice lady told me that all the hour slots start on the hour and they were not slammed. She showed me tomorrow and nearly every slot was open. So that takes some stress off. I thought about reserving a slot but decided to stick to every other day for a while. So I'll call tomorrow and get me a time for Wednesday morning.
On the way home, I stopped at Amazon to drop off a return, then at Krispy Kreme for my donut and then at Jack in the Box to try their new cheddar breakfast biscuit. (I'd give the sausage one a 5 out of 10 and the bacon one a 7 out of 10. Their biscuits just aren't nearly as good as McDonald's so they start behind the curve anyway. But, they were on special.)
Then home.
It was really hot in the bedroom last night. I don't want to turn on the air conditioning yet, but the ceiling fan alone ain't cuttin' it. I did have a little fan that I thought would work but it's what got returned to Amazon this morning. I have a different type being delivered today. The living room is fine so if the bedroom stays bad before I resort to A/C, I might just sleep out here.
It's so quiet here this morning that I can hear them practicing the national anthem at the baseball park which is two long city blocks away.
The baseball game starts at 1. I hate games where they wear camo stuff. I actually hate camouflage fabric. 1st, it's the colors - they are just ugly but also it's my 60's peacenik upbringing that even now has me wary of all things military.
Plus I was not raised with Memorial Day. I never even heard of it until I went to college. It wasn't a holiday we observed or even knew about in the South back in the olden days. I just checked and see that Memorial Day did not even become a federal holiday until I was out of college. But most of everyone I went to school with were from western PA, NY,NJ and north. They taught me that Memorial Day was for the beach and beer. I didn't learn a lot at college but I did get those life fundamentals.
Time now to go hang up the swim suit and see what needs to be done before game time.
