Whew! Home again...
Aug. 1st, 2009 12:40 pmWhat an adventure that was. And fun. But hot. The train is just flat fun. Coming home it was also standing room only!
I have an Orca card that you 'fill' with money (on their website or from a kiosk) and then swipe for your fare. For the train, you swipe once and it deducts the most expensive fare ($2.50) then you swipe when you get off and it credits back if you took a shorter trip. Then, apparently, further swipes are ignored until you hit your time limit (2 hours?). I just checked my action today - much swiping and it recorded accurately. Very cool. But hard to remember to swipe when you get off.
The MAJOR bonus for the day was at the very very cool Beacon Hill station. This is the station for my library and my grocery store. I got off the train and was taking a long shot of the station. I saw two people down the way and when I moved my eye from the camera, I realized it was
machupicchu and Barbara!! Matthew had said they were going to 'do' the light rail today - check out all the stations but they were going later than I wanted to. We cracked up at meeting.

Other highlights:
That Beacon Hill station is actually way underground (15 stories, I think) and one wall is painted deep blue. Lighted sculptures hang from the ceiling that resemble sea creatures. It's a wonderful wonderful place.
The sun really was hot. And bright. In Columbia City there was a second hand shop or consignment (or both, I didn't really pay attention) with the nicest folks. I fell into there and told them that if they didn't sell me something to block the sun, there were going to have to adopt me cause I would not be leaving. They had the perfect hat and it is a good one, too - 9 West!
At the end of that block (no, don't be silly, I wasn't putting off going uphill 3 long blocks back to the train!) was a nail salon with a big sign that said "Walkins Welcome!" So I did. Not much English and it was kind of a gritty place but what the hell. She started my manicure and was doing what I thought was a halfassed job when she started to massage my hand and forearm. Oh my god. It was heaven!! I indicated my appreciation and she kept on going and really did a wonderful job. My hands, wrists and arms now honestly feel like they can compute and knit for another 60 years! Best $10 I ever spent and I tipped her $5!
When I got back to my station, I decided to duck into Uwajimaya to see if they had one of their cold beef and noodle salads made up. They did. And then I spied the stuffed squid which looked really good. What the heck, right? I figure it will make a lovely dinner. She asked me if I wanted it cut up and I said sure. It does look and smell yummy! (And
aellia squid is quite delicious. It has a mild flavor and a great texture. I'm looking forward to dinner.
But, first, I think I'll put my feet up for a bit and rest. That's a lot of goin' for a sitter like me!
