The birthday boy

susandennisToday is my baby brother's 56th birthday. He was born in Kansas City when I was 4 and my sister was 3. I don't remember the name of the hospital where he was born but it was very tall and brick with tiny little windows. Children were not allowed in. Daddy took my sister and me there anyway and we walked around to the side of the building that had the window to Mom's room and she came to the window and waved to us. I remember it vividly.
And I am astounded now at how they must have worked that out. Not only did they not have cellphones, of course, there were no phones in her room. They must have set a time. I marvel at the idea of my father wrestling two little girls into their Sunday School clothes complete with combed hair and getting them anywhere at an appointed time.
I also remember vividly the day they brought him home from the hospital. He had on brown pants and a yellow shirt and they laid him out on the living room floor atop a satin blanket and friends and neighbors came to see him. He was the first boy and Daddy's namesake and it came clear to me quickly that we had a problem. My sister was enough of a distraction for everyone but now a boy baby??!! How was this all about me??!!!
