. . Ha! Yes, of course I've seen several, although not in a long time. When I was really little, you may recall, my family was part of a fundamentalist Baptist church that generally regarded television-watching as sinful. Breaking the TV out of the closet on rare occasions, such as for the 1984 Reagan/Mondale debates, was a big, big deal. Given the rarity of TV use, having an up-to-date TV with something like a remote control was not at all a priority with my family in the late seventies and early- to mid-eighties. In fact, I don't think we had a genuine remote control until we moved to Spokane in 1985. I was 9.
The first remote control I ever saw wasn't even really remote -- it was kind of a cheat. My dad's parents had one for their big, screen-in-a-box-that-sat-on-the-floor TV in Shelton. Except the "remote" was on the end of a cord that ran to the TV. Even that TV had dials on it.
But I, like very, very few other people, continued to own a TV with actual dials on it well into the 21st Century. I had two of them, even! Before I met Shobhit, the only TV I owned was an old, 13" color TV that I got as a hand-me-down from my mom's parents, which they used to keep in their kitchen when I was a kid. (This was no big deal to me as I had zero personal interest in television for a full decade, between around 1996 and maybe 2006 -- it was only TiVo that got me into it again.) For a long time, I had that color TV propped on top of another TV -- a black and white one! Also with dials, which I got as a present from my mom when I was a teenager, her welfare-mom version of providing her kids with their own TVs for their bedrooms. It stopped working long before I got rid of it, but for a while I was making like a redneck and using it as a TV stand for the color TV!
So, yeah, I have surprisingly extensive experience with TV dials. . .
He had FIVE!! When we were married I was 30 and the children were: 27, 25, 17, 15 and 14. The oldest two were girls and never did live with us. The rest lived with us on and off. And, no, I have no clue where any of them are now. Shockingly, we did not bond.

You might be amazed to find out that even I remember that phrase: "Don't touch that dial!"

Date: 2009-08-27 03:40 pm (UTC)My first video player - a beta max - had a wired remote control.
'Careful, don't trip over the cord' was our 'welcome to the TV room' (it was when I was married with children).

I've been telling you for years that my memory isn't perfect!
Besides, when you said "married with children," I was thinking little kids, not teenagers and adults.
