Morning People
May. 6th, 2003 08:30 amUsually I am the first or second person in to work every day. This morning as I rounded the corner I saw Mark, who is the other early person, heading in. But, when I got to the door, all the lights were on and there was a gaggle of people hanging in the applications services area.
In the past when we've launched a new application, these guys generally worked all night because there were always hitches here and there getting set up to 'go off' first thing east coast time. But, now they have it down and just come in early.
But, it's clear, these are not morning people. A couple of them looked very pitiful. They looked like I would if it were 6:30 p.m. and I was still at work slugging away.
I've always been a morning person. At every place I've ever worked, I've always been the first one in or one of the first ones. My coffee pot knows to have the coffee done and ready to drink by 6 a.m. weekdays or weekends.
In college I could stay up all night if I was winning lots of money at bridge or if there was some peace vigil that needed marchers. My first real live job was a newspaper reporter on a morning paper. I worked 2-11 p.m. covering the thrills of city council meetings and the early shift of late night shootings. After work we'd all go out and get dinner and screw around until 2 or 3 and then I'd go home and sleep until about noon and then it was time to go to work again. I did that for a year and at the end felt like I'd lost a year of my life and it turned me into a real morning person.
I love the early morning hours at work. I use it to read LJ, get organized, get started. No one speaks to me and the time is mine, all mine.
The price I pay for this is that I am totally stripped of any coherant thought by 11 p.m. every night. If you call me at midnight, you will get a babbling idiot. Actually, I probably won't even hear the phone. I am usually in bed reading by 9:30 and rarely still awake by 10:30.
It's a luxury to be able to indulge my morning personage. These poor night guys are bumping around here like pinballs gone bad. It's a sad sight to see.
