My neighbor Ann asked me to mail her mortgage payment on Nov. 2. She and Ron are in Mexico for two weeks. She told me Monday, Nov. 2 several times AND wrote it down on a post it note attached to the envelope.

I dropped it into the blue pick up box today because they don't pick up that box until 3:00 tomorrow. But tomorrow is the 26th! Not the 2th!!!

I cannot believe I did that. I do know that her mortgage company is Wells Fargo and she told me they screwed her over once before about something so she didn't want to take any chances that the deposit that covers the mortgage check won't be in the bank until the 30th.

Oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck. I don't have a clue what to do. I don't know how to contact them but I don't think I would if I could. No sense in fucking up their vacation. I don't know the bank account number and am not sure what I would do if I did know it.

I can't believe the mail pick up person will let me pull the envelope but I absolutely will be at that box tomorrow at first pick up. I'll go over in the morning to verify the time. Fuck fuck fuck fuck.

The bank won't talk to you anyway, because of privacy laws. If it gets there before the 30th it will hit their account, but one of two things will happen. One it will be paid, but their account will be overdrawn and they will get an overdraft fee. Two it will be returns to Wells Fargo and they will get an NSF fee, but then Wells Fargo will present the check again.

This doesn't help for this case but you might suggest they set up their payment to automatically come out of their account. That way they don't have to worry about it being too early or too late.

You can try asking the post office nicely, and take the post-it note with you. But since its not in your name, they may not give it back to you.

I don't know that you'd want to or be able to do this, but you only have one real option that for sure will do the job. Call Ann, get the account number for the bank account that the check is drawn on, you run to the bank and deposit what would be needed to cover the check in to her account (I've never had a bank refuse to let me make a *deposit* in to someone else's account (I put money in my mother's bank account all the time...we live in different cities but we both bank with the same company)), especially if you do it with cash), and then when Ann get's back she can give you back your money.

Other than that, since its in her name and not yours you don't have a whole lot of options.

Seriously, it doesn't sound like a big deal, but tampering with the mail is a crime. In your situation, it wouldn't really be mail tampering. But the postal worker has no way of knowing that for sure (they shouldn't just trust you) so you're putting them in an awkward situation.

Fess up, throw yourself on your sword, insist on paying any fees or penalties. But it is worth talking to the postal person I suppose. But then you know all of this anyway. I hope it works out.
