He ain't no Johnny Depp
Feb. 17th, 2010 09:27 amWhile I am still pretty taken with Hugh Grant, I have a new man in my fictitious life. It's an odd obsession but I can't get enough of Martin Clunes. There is just something about him that I can't get enough of.
I remember seeing his face in the odd movies now and again but when I finally connected him to a name and remembered it was from a little watched (at least over here) British TV series William and Mary.
Now I'm stuck on another series of his Doc Martin. He plays a brilliant and noted surgeon who develops panic attacks at the sight and smell of blood so he's moved to the country and is the GP for a small town.
Even as I describe it, it sounds boring and it should be and Clunes is no pinup or even really attractive but I can't stop watching episodes. I have to watch most of them twice because while my ear can fairly easily understand Hugh, some of the other British accents take a couple of listens before I can get the detail plus the colloquialisms take some thinking through. (I will be very glad when they add subtitles to Netflix streaming.)
Series 1 is on Netflix streaming. Series 2 is on DVD only. Series 3 is now on our PBS channel. It's nice to know there is so much Martin Clunes/Doc Martin in my future.

Date: 2010-02-17 09:49 pm (UTC)I am English, born in England, and have been down to Cornwall (where Doc Martin is set) n numerous trips as I have relatives who live there. It is a great place, Martin was also in a series called "Men Behaving Badly". He was a lot younger in that, and it is a comedy, perhaps you could look out for that if you like Martin Clunes.
By the way, William and Mary was only on for one maybe two series, so there isn't much of that programme sadly. I enjoyed that but its all about ratings with the TV and I guess it didn't have enough people watching it !
I like reading your blog, keep it up.
Susan (yes that's really my name also) :o)

Date: 2010-02-17 09:56 pm (UTC)I remember Men Behaving Badly - but, happily, not enough to spoil seeing it again and I'll go find it. Thank you!
Do your relatives in Cornwall know Elaine??? :)

Date: 2010-02-18 10:21 pm (UTC)I went on Youtube last night and watched the entire first episode of Doc Martin when he first arrived in Portwenn. Stephanie Cole is a good actress - the one who plays his aunt.
Anyway, are you referring to Elaine the receptionist???!! Highly unlikely though I suspect they may know someone "like" her. LOL
Sorry if I appear anonymous, i don't have a blog!
Susan in a very cold England at the moment
