I've railed about Microsoft updates - the kind that restart your machine without even asking - for years. I have altered all my machines to prevent it. It's more than annoying that I have to do this.

But, that does not hold a candle to the shenanigans of Adobe. I do not use Adobe products if I can help it. But, on my work machine, I am forced to use their PDF reader (the other PDF readers won't work for stuff I need). I have the reader set to NEVER update automatically EVER.

I just got a notice that Adobe will be shutting my machine down for an update in 24 minutes. My only option? Do it now, rather than wait 24 minutes.

I totally get the perils of not updating. Adobe needs to get that this decision should be mine and not theirs.

Rarely have I ever wanted a dick but this makes me want one so I can tell them to suck it.

Hopefully the iPhone and iPad will make adobe obsolete. It's going to be a fun battle to watch.

Strangely, I don't get that with their creative suite, the adobe readers, yes, as they are updated and/or made obsolete at a given point.

I don't know if Apple will make them obsolete for Photoshop is too good of a program to be rid of for us creative types who use it or any of their other creative programs such as Indesign, Illustrator and Premier (when not using Final Cut Pro) for video.

This is why I block Adobe's servers from my systems.

Ooh, I like that idea. What do you do, add a 127.0.0.1 redirect for *adobe* to your hosts file?

Yep, exactly ... there are a series of lines to add to block various flavors of Adobe evilness.

(I'm a mac guy, but I assume the same principle works for others, as well ...)

I am (as you may detect from my icon) a Mac guy as well. Might you share the lines you use to block the various flavors of Adobe badness?

Heh ... I wondered about that, but I know that this journal is deep in Microsoft territory. :)

Anyhow, here's the list -- it came from a friend, so I can't personally vouch for it, but it's definitely worked for me.
