I was outside just now and saw a guy walk by with a No Iraq War button on. My first thought was 'gee, can't they make a more attractive button than that???'

Wouldn't more people wear it if it wasn't so ugly?

The very very first internet purchase I made was a lapel button. I remember it was before IE and before Netscape 2, in other words, before you had colored backgrounds to webpages... Anyway, this guy had a webpage selling big old buttons that were white with the international 'no' circle with a slash and the words "OJ Free Zone". His website said 'send me a buck and I'll send you a button.' I put a dollar in an envelope and within a week I had my button. I've bought a few things more online since then but one does tend to remember one's first.

I have this jacket from the Salvation Army that has all kinds of buttons on it - I am a 60's child - and one of those is the OJ button. I don't wear it often but nowadays, when I do, most people don't get the OJ reference.

war isn't pretty.

would you really have noticed it if it were prettier? the point is to get the message across, not to be aesthetically pleasant.

It also manages to put a "peace" message into the oh-so-popular patriotic medium. I wonder if you would have thought this so ugly a few years ago, before the red, white and blue receptors in your eyes were burned out.

You post about buttons reminds me of FLAIR, flair being the various buttons the employees had to wear in the movie Office Space. Ever see that movie? I think you might like it.

I have some buttons from WWII. They were my grandfathers. One is of a fighter plane. It is my favorite.

You are in the business of communications. I can understand why you notice ugly buttons. At my work they would of torn it apart too but because of the design. In my dept. I don't think they much care one way or another about war. This is very unlike the majority of faculty who are dead set against war. I have mixed feelings but at least I care. But i don't wear flair because (shhhh) I am self conscious of my -- of my chest. It is too big and I hate my breasteseses. I need reduction and I need it now! Sorry, i know this is more info than you want to know.

how embarrassing

I'm an escapee from the sixties myself but I don't remember that reference to OJ! I have probably just forgotten...but what does it stand for?

Are you serious, that most people would not get THAT reference? Of course I remember the OJ trial, and remember wanting to be well away from it and the white Bronco. For some reason I thought you were referring to the anti-Vietnam War period and I didn't remember any OJs then. So my memory is not quite as foggy as I thought.
