Another NYC question
Jun. 10th, 2003 09:10 pmMy Kiwi friend is nailing down details for his trip and has another question that I'm not sure I know the answer to...
He's going one way from NYC to Philadelphia on September 3. He's thinking train. When he checks Amtrak the fare he finds is $187. When I check, I see $148.
Question is... is Amtrak it for train from NYC to Philly? Is bus better? Cheaper? Train worth it? Tips? Tricks? Thanks.

depends on the train he chooses.

Date: 2003-06-11 08:58 am (UTC)It does (it does the whole Boston-Washington run). I've taken the Acela to Philadelphia a number of times; it's significantly more expensive than the regular trains in part because it only has Business Class and First Class (no coach). Of course, this means that it's also nicer as well as faster. Still, John and I are going to Philadelphia the weekend after next, and we were going to take the Acela, but decided it wasn't worth paying twice as much to save an hour or so each way. It almost certainly isn't worth the difference in cost for a short trip like New York-Philly.

Date: 2003-06-10 11:09 pm (UTC)You pay more for trains with fewer stops (the metroliners). But depending on the time of day you depart, a local can be almost as fast as a metro. (more stops but less time spent waiting at stations.) This was all before acela tho'.
Steve commuted from NYC to Philadelphia for almost a year and I think he tried both train and bus. I'll ask him when he wakes up tomorrow. But if leg room is any consideration then trains are the way to go.

I believe one of these passes allows the holder to travel on any Amtrak train in the Northeast zone for five consecutive days for one flat fare. There are other fares which allow travel in multiple zones, but I think the Northeast pass would suit your friend nicely.
It really is a great deal. I once met an Australian gentleman traveling on one of those passes down the Coast Starlight run from Seattle to LA. I think I broke his heart, but it was a nice train ride.

Date: 2003-06-11 10:46 am (UTC)You can take the NJ transit to trenton then septa to philly for $30 rt, or the Dragon Coach which goes from Chinatown NYC to Chinatown Philly for $20 rt (no changing). I rec the Dragon Coach b/c you don't have to change, it takes just under 2 hours, and you see a fab movie!
A one way should cost slightly more than half the amounts listed.
Jackie.
