Fernwood Baseball Tonight
Jun. 17th, 2003 07:56 pmWe have one great baseball broadcast announcer here in Seattle. He's so great and so loved that they make him work half the game on radio and half on TV just to keep all of us happy. The other commentators range from ok to I'm-going-to-send-guido-if-he-doesn't-shut-up. Oh there is one good color guy, but that's not the point of this entry...
Tonight our regular announcers have been joined by Martin Mull. And he's making a pretty decent color guy. It's very interesting. Baseball announcers are generally former players who did not get their via their silver tongue. We get lucky if they can put a grammatically correct sentence together with two or fewer cliches.
Several years ago we had a guy who was a TV writer. He was actually a writer for Cheers. Never played ball in his life and he was fabulous. Interesting and different and articulate and grammatically correct. And he didn't have a great command of the sports cliche. But, alas, after his second year, Cheers ended its run on TV and he had to go back to LA and find a good paying gig. And we never heard from him again...
It's fun having a new voice and a different one at the mike tonight.

Date: 2003-06-18 02:45 pm (UTC)It was hard to gather the how and why of his doing it but I did get that it was a Fox Sports deal and not a Mariners deal (the regular broadcasters are Mariners employees). I need to send FoxSports a note to tell them to bring him back.
He says he follows the Mariners on his Dish and seemed to know a lot about the team. Very odd and very cool.
