Me and Seattle - match made in heaven
Jan. 2nd, 2011 11:25 amEvery so often I am slapped in the face by how much I love this town. How perfectly it suits me.
The first time I saw Seattle was January of 1992 which was also when I moved here. My plan was to stay 18-36 months (my average living in any one zip code) and then move on to downtown Chicago. The move opportunity came in November of 1994 but by that time, I was hopelessly, madly passionately in love with Seattle and I said 'no thanks.'
This morning, I walked down to Pike Place Market under the soon to be gone viaduct. The sun was out but blocked by downtown. The snow capped mountain range was stretched out across Elliot Bay. The scenery was accentuated by the hilarity of Seahawks fans all set up for tailgating. In the freezing cold. 8.5 hours before the game. Looking truly miserable. One block alone had 5 tents. One group had a 50" HDTV perched on the back of a truck and they were huddled around it. The sun made seeing the picture nearly impossible. And, did I mention it was more than a little chilly?
I had breakfast at Seatown. This is a relatively new place in the Tom Douglas empire and I'd never tried it. I thought, as long as I still had $$ on the gift card they gave me, why not? It was a good decision. It's a cute place with a nice menu and great service. Oh and it opens early (8 a.m.). I will go back.
The market was very slow to open this morning. Give 'm a day off and they have trouble recovering. I walked through about 10:45 and only about 25% of the vendors were open and most had not even come close to finishing setting up yet. It did look like they were going to get a good crowd today so they'd better get crackin'!
On the way home I stopped at a hair cut place I've been eyeing. My hair is a month or more away from needing a cut but I will need a new cutter. So I stopped in to check out the joint. Very cool joint. Their 'sign in' sheet is an iPad. Nice, welcoming folks. I promised to grow my hair and be back.
The air was just cold enough to justify my several layers of clothing and make the walk very comfortable and fun. I just love this town. Love, love, love it. Sorry, Chicago.

Date: 2011-01-03 01:40 pm (UTC)But I made the awful decision to move to Los Angeles. Even though I was in one of the good parts (West Hollywood), it was still horrible. It was such a relief to return after that miserable year.
