Today's bits and pieces
Jan. 13th, 2011 12:40 pmI returned the webcam I tried out yesterday. When I got back from the post office there was a note from my brother that he had ordered me one like his!!! I hope he got a deal on it. It's a pricey bugger but boy is it good. I'm going to have to pay way more attention to my hair and face and make sure my shirt is buttoned. But it will be worth it.

And I got an email from Amazon saying they matched Dell's price and are refunding me $101!

When I left Ron yesterday, his computer was struggling to come back after a questionable restore. I just ran into them in the lobby and asked him how his computer was. Ron is the type that when you ask him the time, he'll tell you how the watch works. But, finally, I was able to ascertain that, in fact, it did restore! For some reason now he wants to delete temporary files but wants me to look first and make sure it's ok. I told him tomorrow. Then he continued with great detail so I interrupted him to ask about our neighbor who had a heart attack on Monday (Ron was walking their dog yesterday morning)... I now know way more than I was even remotely interested in. Ya gotta love him.

Normally when I have a tech issue I can't solve, I go to forums. I post my problem. I get a solution. (Or, Murphy's Law of forum posting... I post the problem, *I* figure out the solution!)
In the past two weeks I have posted two different problems each on two different forums and have gotten not one single nibble. One is an issue with the EVO after the last software update. One guy has the same problem and that's the only noise either forum has generated.
The other is that pesky wireless problem on the laptop... One guy on the Ask Microsoft forum wanted more details but then he apparently lost interest. The other forum has no replies at all.
I have officially Stumped The Chumps.

Amira was scheduled to clean today. She usually gets here about 9. By 10 there was no sign and then I got a call. She said she would come at 2:30. She hasn't pulled this stunt in nearly a year. I was not happy but I said ok. Then after I hung up, I sussed the situation. As it happens, this place isn't too bad this week. And I want her to know I'm not going to stand for this kind of crap. So I called her back and said that we'd just skip this time and I'd see her in two weeks. Now she wasn't happy but that's part of what I was going for. At least I save money.

When we were in Las Vegas at one of the restaurants, I saw a server filling a Styrofoam container and did a double take. I hadn't seen one in quite some time. They are outlawed here and it was strange to see one in use. I say this now as I eat my lunch out of a totally unsuitable cardboard container. Styrofoam would be so much more suitable.
---
Ok, back to work. I have 2.5 more hours to go.

Date: 2011-01-13 09:13 pm (UTC)Much more often than not, I get nothing when I post. I seem to get the doozy problems.
They are outlawed here
Up here, businesses have been urged to switch to something else when something else will do. But there are still times when styrofoam is the only good answer (e.g., take-out chili).

Date: 2011-01-13 10:33 pm (UTC)Also, if you are connecting via WEP you might consider changing to WPA. If the router & laptop do 802.11N protocol, this will give you the full speed of N, and a stronger signal.
As for Ron's loquaciousness, this is why I live where there is no contact with neighbors. Ask me the time and after I tell you how the watch works, I'll explain the Mayan calendar, the Zodiac and the Big Bang theory. ;-)
BTW, LJ spell checker wants to replace Comcast with Compost. :-)

Date: 2011-01-13 10:42 pm (UTC)No WEP or WPA - open network (yes, I understand the risks and it does NOT have the default ssid)
If I were younger, I'd ask Ron about the Big Bang Theory :)

Date: 2011-01-13 11:57 pm (UTC)Yup, 68.87.69.150 68.87.85.102 look to be the WA DNS addresses. What that should do for you is make the router look to Compost for the name-to-IP address translation - something your router ought to be doing anyway (and is obviously doing for the other devices).
You also might try playing with the Windows 7 network places page. I seem to remember having a similar problem when I first installed Win7.
