Yesterday when I was in our huge and varied Japanese grocery store, I was looking for graham crackers and found SkyFlakes instead. I was sucked in by the cool looking tin.

I got 'em home and gave 'em a go and wow! They are delicious!! Nothing fancy - more substantial than saltines and just a fine, fine taste in a very cool looking tin. Why didn't anyone ever tell me about these? What else are you holding out on me about????

The Northwest is a fabulous place to live but there are some food items that are totally missing or very scarce ([livejournal.com profile] cloverbee knows how hard it is to live without pimento cheese.) But we also do not have regular old graham crackers. Oh we have honey grahams and cinaman grahams and probably garlic and sun dried tomato grahams but no regular old red box Nabisco Graham Crackers. Isn't that wrong?

I've never seen them...but I'm a fellow Easterner. You can't find Nabisco Graham Crackers up there?

I haven't looked for Pimiento Cheese.

Then again, I've never had Ben and Jerry's Coffee Toffee Crunch ice cream other. Lots of other flavors, but not any of the coffee ones.

No Hellman's Mayo either. Although they say it's Best Foods out here.

Best Foods is Hellman's - same mayo, same company.

Best Foods = West Coast
Hellmans = East Coast

Dreyer's= West Coast
Edy's = East Coast

OroWheat = West Coast
can't remember the name of = East Coast

There are others, but you get the jist... :-)

They have ready-made graham cracker pie crusts. Even a "lite" version. I use them all the time for a quick low-cal key-lime pie.

I bought a book several years ago about Southern specialty food items and where to see where they are made or how to order them. This is before web sites, but it is still interesting to see. Some of my favorites:

Cheerwine (cherry cola from North Carolina)....much better than cherry coke!!

Goo Goo Clusters
Moon Pies
Maurices BBQ (South Carolina style)

Oh I need to go find that book....lots of fun stuff!

I have always wondered: exactly what is a moon pie?

They do, it's just marketed under the name "Best Foods".

I knew about the Helmans and Best Foods. They are the same.

I have trouble finding the Grahams here in Fl too. I like the plain ones with milk,, and never can find them either. What's up with that?

Can't remember ever seeing pimento cheese. Do you use it in cooking or just by itself?

Come to think of it I don't think I've seen any olive loaf (pimento stuffed olives in bologna) in groceries or deli for years.

I can't find Strawberry Honey anywhere here. Not even at Harry's which has 72 different kinds of squash and 17 kinds of pimento cheese.

And you can forget a decent bagel. They don't exist in Georgia.

But I have found that Pillsbury now has pretty good southern biscuit. It is in the frozen food section with the frozen dinner rolls. There is a good chance that they won't carry them either, but it might be worth a shot. I keep them because they are much better than my attempts. I just never watched my mom enough to get the hang of it.
