I'm sacrificing the gym today. My co-worker has an overflowing plate and can use the help so I'm helping her out until 11 when I'll go into my boss's office to swap out my operating system. The funny thing about the gym is that I wanted to go to try out my new shoes. Tomorrow. I'll do it tomorrow.

I have zero plans for the weekend except for getting the work computer all re-set up. There will be plenty of time for gym and anything else. Monday's looking clear as well. Tuesday starts the run - heads down work until June. I feel like I should carbo load.

But, now it's time to head out for The Deed.

On an entirely unrelated issue: while there are guest artists in the April SMC show, their role is pretty different from what you're used to, as is who they are.

The first act is centered around pre-war Germany and the Weimar cabaret gestalt. Nick Garrison, who played the Master of Ceremonies in CABARET at the 5th and in the West Coast tour they put together (as well as starring in HEDWIG here, as well as performing with The Love Markets, and lots more) will be performing with them, but essentially, AS the Master of Ceremonies.

The second act is an extended piece, FOR A LOOK OR A TOUCH, an operetta about the secret love between two gay men in Nazi Germany, based on a true story (covered in the documentary PARAGRAPH 175). The work was originally written for baritone, actor, and chamber orchestra; it was intended to include a full men's chorus too, but that wasn't in the original for reasons that are minorly controversial. The composer, Jake Heggie, has rewritten it to include the men's chorus, and SMC is debuting it. (Heggie is probably best known for the opera of DEAD MAN WALKING.) It's hard, serious singing -- the sort of work SMC doesn't do that often because it's not a big toe-tapper, but at which they and Dennis excel. The older non-singing role, Gad Beck, is played by Seattle actor David Pichette, who was Pangloss in the 5th's CANDIDE last season and is currently in SLEUTH at the Village Theatre. The baritone is Morgan Smith, who created the role a few years ago, but has grown to be something of the operatic flavor-of-the-year since.

(If you see it in Edmonds, since Smith isn't available, Garrison and The Love Markets will be guest artists. I'm a big fan, so I'm probably going to see a show out-of-town AND in Seattle for the first time in my eight years here. It will also be a lighter show than the Seattle show, since Act I is pretty upbeat, and The Love Markets will be nowhere near as heavy as FOR A LOOK OR A TOUCH.)

So, yeah, guest artists, but not in the way they're used in other shows, and not the sort that are meant to pack 'em in on name value.
