I killed a laptop today. And then, I twisted the knife. I wanted a clean install of Windows 7 but it wouldn't let me - it tossed out a bunch of acronyms and pissed me off. So I went into the BIOS and tried to find what it wanted and couldn't but did manage to prevent Windows from loading. At all.

So I went back to BIOS and restored default - still no go. Then I went back into the Windows 7 install and killed the main hard drive. Now I got nuthin - well, that's not entirely true. I've got my baby brother. He says if it will boot from a CD, then all is cool. So, guess who won himself an all expenses paid trip to Texas?? My laptop, that's who!

I even had a box here and now it's all packed. I may just trot it over to the post office this afternoon.

I was thinking UPS but that involves car and my car is out of gas. And I hate getting gas. Plus, I had a post office flat rate box. Those things are just handy.

I have a little work I could do this afternoon and might.

Tomorrow is Chef Anita day and my doctor's appointment to get the bumps off my head (I'm sure she won't do that tomorrow but, hopefully, she'll say 'sure, easy peasy, wanna do it this week?' and I'll say YES!)

Now I'm having lunch - cheese and ham and one of those funky flat bagels. Jury is still out on the latter but I think it's going to be a 'why bother?'.

One thing you can try yourself, before mailing it off, is to download an Ubuntu LTS CD and try booting from that. If it works then it's very likely salvagable (whether by you or your brother). Could give you some indicator of results.

If anything I suspect that the BIOS settings need tweaked, or the hard drive replaced. I doubt there is anything wrong with the rest of the laptop.

That's cool.

I understand where you're coming from. My desktop has started having problems with 3D rendering (white screen, completely dead, hard reboot) and I've had to deal with so many problems from that desktop that I just want someone else to make the problems go away. But not for the price I tend to see advertised, as then I could probably just buy a whole new computer.
