I have been a news junkie for many many years. I majored in journalism and started life as a newspaper reporter. Until yesterday, I would have said that even when the reporting is horrible, I can't stand not to watch. Turns out that is not true.

After 24 solid hours of every single fucking detail of The Killing and having to listen to endless hours of reactions from fools important and not, I hit a wall and there is still no relief now that yet another 24 hours has passed. All networks - PBS and NPR included are just torturing me.

I thought I had had enough wedding news. I would kill for a 5 minute feature on what Kate and William had for breakfast this morning.

Maybe I'm just over the news all together. Maybe it's time to adopt the [livejournal.com profile] machupicchu I Never Watch Or Read The News attitude. Tonight I fast forwarded through everything not Killing related and finally got a nice piece on a woman who was shot 5 times when her restraining order didn't work. Interviews of family members.

Torture.

Edit later - I've got tons of TV to watch. I have two TiVos full of it. But, what I'm missing is some news of the day. News other than that the rehashing of every single tiny detail of The Killing. It's difficult for me to believe the world has stopped still since Sunday night. Surely there is stuff happening but how in the hell am I ever going to know?

Ok, I'm done. I've said my piece. The end.

If you get CBC, there's a hockey game on now.

(Well, it's not all-Osama-all-the-time.)

Is there anything on the BBC? Usually they're better than the US services.

I can tell you what I had for lunch - does that help? It was tofu pad thai (supposedly 5 stars, but it was more like 1.5.)

Well, Canada had an election. I guess that counts as news, although given the results it's not good news.

Yeah.... are you taking immigrants directly? Or do I need to move to Mexico first?

We have the added bonus of the China Arnold Trial Take Three going on here. If they are not talking about The Killing, they are talking about her and murder.

The boys and I watched Scooby Doo.

No, I mean to do it to ANYONE -- it's their idea of fun. Fortunately for them, unlike you and me, there are others they know who seem to agree. There's a kink for everyone.

Up here, at least, there is much more news about the election than about The Killing. I like to think there are other good reasons to be a Canadian, as well.

I, too, blinked in oh-really?-that-explains-a-few-things surprise to learn of your major and early career. Apparently, although you had little drive to share the news you do have a drive to communicate through the written word. Fortunately.

The excessive coverage of any and all extreme events has become a plague with most U.S. media outlets. I tend to avoid most broadcasts, but occasionally completely miss important items I want to know. Difficult to find the most effective line to walk.

One of the reasons I chucked my life as a journalist to chase electrons for a living is there is hardly any news in a newspaper, it is mostly relentless, thoroughly predictable follow-ups. In 50 years on May 1, there will be a blurb on the front page reminding us it was 50 years ago that Osama...

My approach to news makes me happy! And you know happiness is what drives me.

And as I said, if it's really big news -- and therefore worth knowing -- I generally find out about it anyway.

Actually I've long avoided news broadcasts first and foremost because I think they spend too much time on either terrible news (I know people get shot, for example; I just don't want to hear about it every single time a shooting happens somewhere, at least not without some accompanying positive and/or inspiring news, which news broadcasters generally ignore) or glorifying bullshit.

I was kind of liking BBC News in my Friends list but a) it overwhelmed my friends list with too many news items and b) I got tired of reading about deadly bus accidents off cliffs in South Asia.

I do kind of wish I could figure out some way to create some feed somewhere that is not too frequent with its posts and somehow caters to what I would consider a need-to-know basis. I can dream!
