Interesting afternoon
Jul. 23rd, 2003 04:39 pmNot too very long ago in the very space I was bitching and carrying on about the sexual inuendo and homophobic humor being bandied about freely. I mentioned that we were scheduled to have training on the subject and my experience with such training was that it covered the legal butt of management and taught the offenders new and even more offensive tricks.
Plus, remember, I am your resident skeptic. Someone just today pointed out that not only is my class always half empty, I usually try to pour some out to make sure it stays that way.
And I'm here to tell you that I just spent 3 solid hours captivated by a human resources consultant who did such a good job that the 3 hours felt like 3 minutes. I was educated (and I pretty much knew it all going in, I thought), entertained and fascinated. And very impressed that my co-workers were as well. It was pretty amazing.
I've sat through many a sexual harrassment seminar required by management. At IBM non managers had to do it every year. When I was a manager it seemed like it was every month. But none were like this. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to have been there today. It was good.
Plus, you know what? It is just a pleasure to watch someone who is so very good at what they do and who really enjoys it do their thing.
Just a nice gift. Thank you. And, I intend to express my thanks to the fuckchop who arranged it. He lost some points on his fuckchop certificate today. What can I say?

Date: 2003-07-23 05:14 pm (UTC)And I forgot to add another good thing. The room was freezing cold. I've been so hot now for so many days that it felt wonderful to be cold.
What is a semi-fuckchop?
Date: 2003-07-23 06:56 pm (UTC)Congrats on having one of those training sessions that was worthwhile. I never did.
Re: What is a semi-fuckchop?
Date: 2003-07-23 07:12 pm (UTC)Seriously, though, I did think about you since I think your experience with these things most closely resembles mine.
One thing I learned was that this all came from the Civil Rights amendment in the mid-60's. The thing languished in Congress forever. Then Kennedy was assassinated and Johnson used this to push it through 'do it in his memory.' The Southern representatives, in a last ditch effort, tacked on women as a protected class knowing that a law giving women equal rights would NEVER pass. Ha!!
But, isn't that interesting? And, when an amendment is challenged in court, traditionally, the judges look to the law's origin - what problem was Congress trying to solve - when they are working to interpret. In this case, they didn't have anything to work with.
That's why, mainly, women's rights and sexual harrassment has been such a tough nut to get figured out for the past 40 years!
I never did know any of that!
