I love watching TV but I can't just sit there so I knit. I've been knitting since I was 6 and now I'm 62 so I have enough knitted items for me. About 20 years ago I started knitting blankets for our local Aids Hospice.
But knitting blankets in Summer is not that much fun so I poked around for something smaller and hit on bears. The the hospice quit accepting hand made stuff. I found the Baby Corner here. They provide baby stuff to indigent mothers. I asked if they could use some teddy bears and they grabbed 'em.
They give them to siblings of the new babies mainly. But one clinic they work with keeps a supply for incentive. If new mothers make all their pre-natal visits, when their baby is born, they get to pick the bear of their choice (I particularly love that deal).
The green chair pictures like these are because I like to photograph them before I deliver them to the Baby Corner on the 1st day of the month.
For a year I took a picture every day of The Tree That I Hate so I could watch it obliterate the view out my terrace. Once I had the data - a year's worth, I hunted around for another picture a day and hit on the knitting basket.
So that's it. That's the whole story. Surely way more than you bargained for :)
Yarn: I use only acrylic. And cheap :). 4-medium. I chose color as the first decision point and then feel. If it's not soft and smooth to knit with, it goes off the list. Red Heart's Soft and Red Heart's Baby Steps are two of my favorites. I also like Herrschners worsted. Vanna White's yarns are soft enough but, honestly, they are just not a good value - too expensive for the amount of yarn per skein.
Needle: I use an addi turbo lace - size 4. (But, honestly, with 4-medium yarn you could use anything from a 3 to a 6 or 7. I used a 6 for a long time. I can't even remember why I switched now - probably broke the 6 :).
Gauge: I have no idea. Honestly. and, really, it doesn't matter. A woman on Ravelry did one with size 1 needle and sock yarn and it came out as a very cute little cat toy!
. . I was just looking at these and comparing it to the one you gave me for my birthday in 2008 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/machu_picchu/2463062478/in/photostream/), and they've actually evolved quite a bit! . .
In the first photo the bears seem to be circus artists, just forming a pyramid. Lovely. And these bright colours, just perfect for a circus performance! Congratulations to all of you! :-)

Date: 2011-06-01 01:54 pm (UTC)I can see those bears secretly wanting to interact with each other and be photographed. I can see the wheels turning in those cute little heads. :)

Enjoy!

Date: 2011-06-01 03:14 am (UTC)I made a bear a few years ago using the Mother Bear pattern, and I didn't really like it. So I'll have to give your pattern a try.

Really? I love my bear but these new designs look better to me. When you say "better bear" do you mean something like sturdier?
