Trouble in TiVo City

I was afraid of this. Mom's TiVo is giving her some signals that aren't sounding good. She says it keeps telling her to make a daily call. She mentioned it for the first time today but turns out she's been getting these messages for about 10 days and now has no more program listings!. ARUGH. TiVo uses the telephone to call HQ every 24 hours and get the latest TV listings. If no call, then no updated TV listings and soon, no TV listings at all.

I finally got her on the phone and learned that when she tried to make TiVo make the call. The TiVo doesn't believe it's plugged into the phone jack. Mom says that she never knew the TiVo used the phone. I told her to call the people who run the place and tell them she has a phone jack problem. (If she tell's them she has a TiVo problem, she'll be dead in the water.)

I sure wish I could find someone in Charleston who knows TiVo's... I'd pay bucks to have someone go over and fix her up. Crap.

Could Polly help you with that? If not herself, maybe someone she knows and trusts and uses TiVo as well?

I started to mention relying on the bartender and servers, but I remember what you said last night about the "help"

One last idea: find a kind LJ'r in a Charleston group or TiVo group? (easy for me to say, right?)

You are good. Your thinking cap is exactly the same model as mine. But I cannot find an LJer in Charleston or a TiVo-er in Charleston. I know Polly doesn't know anything about them or anyone who has one BUT I think if the telephone check falls through, she's going to be enlisted to find someone. She's volunteered in the past to do just that so I know she's up for trying. TiVo is, apparently, not yet too big in Charleston :).

I get a kick out of "searching" for things, sometimes. Prior experience from working with seniors, and keeping an eye on my little neighbor makes one resourceful.
Of course, it helps to be home and have time for a research projects like that. I don't have TiVo yet, but it's on my B list.
(On the downside, medical leave has some drawbacks too)

I've used so many of your "recommended products" and tips, the least I can do is a bit of research for you.

I'm a needelepointer, cross stitch occasionally,
but I do know how to crochet and knit (barely, I was a teenager the last time) but your journal has me ready to get some knitting needles.

Well, the latest is that she has given up. Everything (TiVo/TV/etc) is in this hutch thing that is huge and it makes it hard to get around to the wires and stuff in the back.

Apparently, the phone lady (who is the secretary to the facilities person) came up and declared she couldn't do anything because she has short arms.

So Mom's latest note is that she just can't deal with it any more today at all. I have sent her a note asking her just to let me hire Polly to assess and fix.

This is the only way to go. If Mom says no then she can futz with it herself. If Mom says yes, then I can walk Polly through some possibilities.

I have decided not to worry about it any more.
