Old timey Sunday
Jul. 10th, 2011 07:55 amMy neighbors, Ann and Ron, still read the newspaper the old fashioned way and have it delivered. They had it stopped while they are in Italy. They are back on Tuesday but had it restarted today. I can't remember why, it may have been a crossword puzzle decision.
So this morning I went down to their door and snagged it. And read it just like the olden days. Only, in the olden days, there was more there there. This morning, not so much. At least I Know for sure I'm not missing much. I would not mind paying for delivery of the paper and it sure wouldn't take much time to read but then I'm stuck with a stack of newsprint that builds up so quickly ... We have recycle bins in the garage but taking out the garbage is enough of a PIA.
The paper did have two pages remembering the 2001 Mariner team which won 116 games. It was a fun season but 9/11 kind of killed it and when the season restarted the magic was gone. And we have not see it since. The Mariners play in Anaheim again today. Friday and Saturday's games were not fun. I am not looking forward to today's game.
The big event today is brunch and a movie with
machupicchu. Are plans are to brunch at one of two places that are across the street from each other. He's going to choice and text or email me the decision before our 10 am meeting. The movie is Bad Bosses.
But I still have some time before I need to leave. I think I'll get some work work done to jump start the week.

Date: 2011-07-10 04:10 pm (UTC)It's always a revelation when I'm somewhere that has a current copy of, especially, a Sunday edition, to compare to what I remember. I've been shocked to see how small the papers are now- not only number of pages, but the pages themselves, broadsheets like USA Today shrunk down to almost tabloid size. And the text is so unimaginative, so internetty-flashylike, dumbed down to the attention span of the Gen-Xers who not only never will subscribe, but who never did.
On the other hand, the Sunday Buffalo News comics still contain some of the oldest, and unfunniest, strips ever made, including Prince Valiant, Moose and Molly, and Beakman and Jax.
