So when California does this vote, will they be voting to oust Gray AND vote in the new guy? Or is the ousting one vote and then later we have the new guy vote? (And, yeah, I think if they get new it will be a guy.)

And... I just heard on TV that there are some 9,000 members of the U.S. Military who have applied for U.S. Citizenship. So how does a non-citizen even join the military? Does it work with just a regular green card? I'm just amazed to hear that there are so many in our armed forces who are not U.S. citizens. Do these people in the military have to do the same crawling over cut glass to maintain our government's requirements for working here?

I'm not really interested in starting fires here, I just serioiusly don't know and am interested in finding out.

I'm not so hip to the voting thing, but I think they're two seperate events. I only think this though because I heard rumor that Gary might run for the new guy too.

it's two different eventts

First comes for the vote asking whether or not to recall Davis. Next, on the same ballot, is the HUGE list of replacements voters can choose from.

It is possible to vote NO on the recall, and then YES on one of the potential replacements (that's the strategy of the main Democratic challenger, the current lt. governor).

Davis tried to get himself on the ballot (so, presumably, citizens could vote to replace him with...HIM), but the California Supreme Court said, "Dream on!"

You can't help but sharpen those skills, living here!

As I've said, despite being born and raised in DC..I've never been as interested in politics as I have been in the past few years.

Never a dull moment

It was hard for me to grasp the possible No on recall and YES on replacement on the same ballot!

The reason you found it hard to grasp is that it's completely insane.

You do not have to be a citizen to enlist. If you enlist in our military, you are eligible for citizenship in 3 years rather than 5. They are fairly careful these days about what level of security clearance they are given.

In fact, if I remember correctly, back when the US used the military draft, non-citizens could be drafted. Maybe only Permanent Residents (holders of "green cards").

it's twoo. Joining the US military is a quick n durty way to get US residence, rather than applying to emigrate based on the points system. Mostly used by working guys and gals.

Canada, the UK and other countries have (or used to have) similar policies.

Also, Philipinos, have always been in the navy mostly. It is a US territory so they can serve and it has nothing to do with their wanting citizenship.

Probably Puerto Ricans too.
