I am giving serious thought to abandoning the gym for the pool. I could do both but I'm wondering if I will.

The gym is $128 a quarter. I feel guilty when I pay and don't go. The pool is $37.50 for 10 times. So if I swim 5 days a week, it will be roughly twice as much to swim as to gym.

I can go to the gym any time I want. Swim is very scheduled. But there are a lot of classes and maybe sometimes I just want to go to and swim laps or do my own thing.

Will winter time make a difference? The only reason I do any of it is to ensure I have enough stamina to do what I want to do. Will swimming give me that? I think so. The muscles in my arms (and in my legs) are already telling me that they got a workout today.

I think I'm going to try the pool for a week. This pool that I went to today has a class every day at noon. Tuesday and Thursdays are Aqua Jog (the same class I took last Friday) and Monday, Wednesday and Friday is the class I took today.

As it happens my quarterly gym bill is due at the end of next week so I can try this for a test for week or two and then decide.

My own personal prejudice: pools are more fun than gyms. Also nicer and more pleasing aesthetically and sensually. And more zen.

Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise. Too bad I don't enjoy pools more. If you like it, go for it.

I love swimming and aqua aerobics, so if you think that will trip your trigger now, go for it. I think the only real danger is that when you're paying for the gym, as you said, if you don't go, you feel guilty, but since the gym is pay by use, it'd be easy to say "Well, I don't feel like it today, so it wouldn't cost me anything if I don't go..." Ya know?

But if you can make yourself go and work in walks the days you don't, it sounds like a good option. :)

I hate to sweat with the purple passion of a thousand alien suns - so pools are great for me because if you do sweat either you don't know it or you dunk yourself under water for a second. Also 300+ pounds on this hinky knee? I think not. Water aerobics cut way, way down on injuries, while the resistance the water offers gives you a better workout than the same exercise on dry land.

My only caveat is make sure you have at least two swimsuits. Nothing worse than a damp suit and they really do best air drying. Now that I've had my surgery and swimming is an option again I can't wait to get back into the pool. (4 more weeks!)

And don't forget to rinse your suit and spin it before you leave the locker room. And check the butt in the mirror chlorine chews up swimsuits. My niece teaches lessons all summer and I frequently see her wearing more than one suit because the bare bits on one are covered by another.

Are you planning on lap swimming ever? I have prescription goggles (not expensive) and training flippers. Without the flippers my legs just kicked and moved me as fast as an inch an hour.

When I joined a gym last year - which was to have access to a personal trainer to help me prepare for Rainier - I chose the gym with the pool.

And never went. I suck.
