Kindle is a keeper
Oct. 3rd, 2011 04:41 pmFirst of all... the packaging. it comes in a regular Amazon brown box. A little higher quality than the regular corrugated cardboard but still a brown Amazon box. There's a box zipper on one end so I unzip it and open the lid and there's the Kindle. Not one smidgen of unnecessary packaging. None. Very impressive. There's a card tucked in the lid that shows where the power button is.
I turned it on and it was all set up for me. Specifically me. (I briefly had a Nook that was NOT set up for me or anyone else. My neighbor, Ann, had to take hers to Barnes and Noble to get it set up and even then she had trouble.) Oh - and this is a biggie for me - it came nearly all charged up!!
I found my books. I ordered the 14 day Seattle Times subscription. I'm going to try it for the 14 days an then try the NYT for 14 days and see who wins. The Seattle paper is cheaper but then...
I read the little how to manual which popped up right away. I plugged into the computer to finish charging it and followed the easy (and clear) instructions for adding documents (added my car manual) and for using while charging. I already know how to get library books onto it.
It's the perfect size and weight for me. Just exactly what I wanted. I'm still not a fan on the e-ink but, I can deal.
I am one happy camper.

The comic book experience is awesome on an iPad.

Date: 2011-10-04 02:45 am (UTC)I must admit that I have been pondering a Kindle for Christmas. I swore up and down that I would never go that route. I love certain authors and must own those books for my book shelf. Then I heard about the library books, and I started to consider the awesome factor. I can still own my favorite books for my book shelf, and I can get other books through the library.
Now since I don't totally understand...does it cost anything to download a book from the library to your Kindle? I made sure that our local library does allow this, and they have it posted on their Facebook page. I already have a library card so will I need anything else? Well other than the kindle? hehe

Date: 2011-10-04 03:05 am (UTC)1. Log onto your library's website (you'll probably need info off your card to set this up.)
2. Look for 'digital' books or Overdrive Click on it.
3. Set yourself up an Overdrive account (your library may do that for you)
4. Log into Overdrive.
5. Hunt for Kindle Books. You can go to advanced search and use the drop down for 'format' - pick Kindle.
6. Find one you like and click on 'add to cart'
7. Click to check out.
8. Click on 'get for Kindle'
9, That will transport you to your book on the Amazon site
10,. click on Get Library book
11, And, if you have wifi turned on on on your Kindle, you will have your book on your Kindle hope page in less than a minute! You have 21 days to read it.
You actually can actually go ahead and do steps 1-8 as a test without even having a Kindle if you wanted to give it a go.
Initially it seems kind of daunting but it won't after a while and getting free books to read without leaving your house is heaven!
