I finally read one too many conversations about memory foam. Last time it was a whole mattress and I finally was about to convince myself that I didn't need one - at least not yet. This time it was a topper and it was just as the check for $300 came in from the insurance company and I bit.

My insurance company, on their own, re investigated the claim for having cysts removed from my head last May.They decided they had not paid enough. I said ok. They sent a check. Found money, if you ask me.

So I ordered a memory foam topper for my bed from Costco. I figured if I hated it, I could just stuff it into the car and run it up the road to their customer service folks. It came yesterday. It was fun to watch it unfold and turn from the size of a small trash can to the size of my bed. It's about two and a half inches thick.

I was worried about it's being too hard to move on and too hot.

It's actually fine and not hot and easy to move. I did not feel like I slept so much better but boy did I feel better when I got up. Usually, it takes a bit to shake the aches and pains of places I annoyed while sleeping. My neck and shoulders seem to get the most abuse but other things as well. This morning when I got up there was no growling from anybody. All body parts were happy. Nice.

Travis and Betty liked it better, maybe even, than I did. They hunkered down and would not move. At one point, in order to change positions, I had to physically pick up Travis and plant him elsewhere on the bed. He was there when I woke up again.

When you 'check out' a digital library book via Overdrive, like a regular library book it has a definitive shelf life. In the case of digital stuff, it's a licensing issues. In the early days, there was a way around this on certain devices. I'm not sure that's true today. But, you can have the stuff for 21 days and I think that's reasonable. You can always recheck it out if you need more time.

But, now that Kindle is in the mix, there's a new option. I checked out my first Kindle book 19 days ago and today, I got a lovely little email from Amazon reminding me that it will expire in 3 days. It really is a nice email. Just the info needed and a picture of the book jacket with the information that if I borrow it again or buy it, any notes I added will be preserved. And it gives me a Buy It link. This is just cool.

In so many ways, Amazon is so smart. So smart.

I will be interested to see what happens when the book expires. If it's still in my 'library' and just not accessible or if there is a buy button then or just how this expiration manifests itself.

Pool class at noon today. I'm really enjoying this schedule of class T/Th/S and free lance M/W/F. It's a nice mix. And I look forward to it with relish every single morning.

And I love this weather. It's cool enough to be comfortable and warm enough to be able to leave the terrace doors open. Perfect. If I can't have snow, that is.

The year I moved to Minnesota, I had been there a month when, on this date - October 11 - they had the first snow of the season. It was wonderful. That year, the white never left the ground until July. I felt like I lived in heaven. The 17 below temperatures were not that much fun but the snow was worth it all. In July, one day the snow melted and mosquitoes the size of Boeing jets landed. It was hot and humid and horrible and I hated Minnesota. And then October came again and the snow and ahhhhhhh. The next May, I moved to California. I had to give up snow but I also avoided those GIANT mosquitoes so i was ok with it. But that next October, I developed severe snow envy that I've had every year since. Sigh.

How odd. I've tried memory foam a few times in the shops, and I always find it stifling hot almost immediately. We must have different plumbing or something, you and I...

I bought a memory foam topper yesterday too! But mine stinks, as in smells. Does yours? I am washing my sheets right now.

Once you get used to the memory foam, I think you'll sleep just fine again. It took me some time to get used to sleeping on the memory foam mattress. For me, the biggest change was the "effort" it took to roll over.

There was snow on the ground in July?? Seriously?

I know you and I differ on this, but I'm a firm believer in season-appropriate weather. And in my opinion snow in July is not season-appropriate. Snow in December? That I can maybe get behind.
