In the 70's? 80'S? They used to have oxygen bars. There were a couple who missed the 'fad over' memo in the Las Vegas airport when we were there in January. I'd kill for one now. I feel like I just cannot get enough air into my lungs. On TV when someone is gasping for air, they slap one of those oxygen masks over their face and they show instant relief. I so need that.

Trying to breathe is exhausting. A short trip to the grocery store is all about having enough breath to get there and back.

Sitting is ok. Totally manageable. Almost pretty fine. Happily, I have a sit down job and core skills in sitting.

I coughed for the first 30 minutes of swimming but after that and since then I've been pretty cough free.

I got some good work hours in and now I'm doing laundry. Things are okdokey as long as no one makes me do jumping jacks or even just do jack. I'm pretty sure he'd be unimpressed with my lame effort.

I am sorry you are going through this. It really is surprising how little extra capacity our lungs have: just a little impairment and we do not get enough oxygen to even walk.

Now, you have me worried. Have you discussed with your physician whether or not the timing of these issues and your beginning swimming is more than a coincidence? They don't use the same chemicals any longer, and those pools are indoors. The building ventilation may harbor all kinds of things.

I've wondered about your continuing to swim during the recovery. I've been advised to rest rest rest and to absolutely avoid exertion when I had pneumonia.

Count me in the ranks of Worried About Susan. If nothing else, perhaps you could have your doctor "prescribe" rental of one of the small, mobile oxygen tanks on a dolly until your lungs recover sufficiently. You could take a hit of oxygen when you need it most. On a more homeopathic track, plants with lots of greenery around your work and sleeping areas would help up the O2 content, as well. Or a misting machine to up the humidity like at the pool.

I'll be thinking healing yellow light your way.

I have no idea if this works, just read it.

During a lecture on Essential Oils, they told us
how the foot soles can absorb oils. Their example: Put garlic on your feet and
within 20 minutes you can 'taste' it.

Some of us have used Vicks VapoRub for years for
everything from chapped lips to sore toes and many body parts in between. But
I've never heard of this. And don't laugh, it works 100% of the time, although
the scientists who discovered it aren't sure why. To stop night time coughing in
a child (or adult as we found out
personally), put Vicks VapoRub generously on the
soles of your feet, cover with socks, and the heavy, deep coughing will stop in
about 5 minutes and stay stopped for many, many hours of relief. Works 100% of
the time and is more effective in children than even very strong prescription
cough medicines. In addition it is extremely soothing and comforting and they
will sleep soundly.

Just happened to tune in A.M. Radio and picked
up this guy talking about why cough medicines in kids often do more harm than
good, due to the chemicals in them This method of using Vicks VapoRub on the
soles of the feet was found to be more effective than prescribed medicines for
children at bed time. In addition it seems to have a soothing and calming effect
on sick children who then went on to sleep soundly.

Out of curiosity:

What music machine are you using when you swim? I'm thinking an mp3 player for the pool would rock...

I had thought about the same thing Dujour mentioned, about the swimming pool. That's a good idea of faxing all your info to the doctor. I hope you can get some oxygen, anything to help ease that horrible feeling of not being able to breath.
Also, I have heard of the Vicks on the feet before and how it works.
