My Mom is 79 years old and loves her computer. More specifically, she loves the internet. She probably spends a total of 3 hours a day browsing the internet and reading and writing email. Last year I got her hooked up with a cable modem and it's been great. She knows how to get to her financial information and to news and does a fair amount of shopping online. But some things just stump her and she's got a lead finger on the mouse. If something doesn't work the way she thinks it should she just clicks and clicks and soon her start bar is 3 times it's size or her Outlook Express icons go missing or there is some other sort of disaster.
So I hooked us up with PCAnywhere so I can log onto her desktop and fix everything and also check up on what the problem might be. She lives in Charleston, South Carolina which is 3,000 miles from here.
Last night she called to say that he had the yield sign and couldn't get the baseball game. The yield sign is our short cut for her email isn't working. She listens to Mariner games via Real Networks. Sure enough her cable was out. She's not sure what plugs into what and she's not quite limber enough any more to get behind the computer or even the modem for unplugging and replugging. We did a couple of things - rebooting and stuff and still no go. She went to bed. When I still couldn't get in several hours later, I called Comcast - her provider. Turns out they had had an outage but it was fixed and she just needed to restart the modem. But, it was 1 a.m. her time by then.
I figured I'd get up early this morning and call her. I did get up early and found email from her! She had called them herself and someone there had walked her through the reset and she was good to go. Comcast was horrible to deal with in getting the cable modem. And terrible to deal with when they cut over from Excite@Home BUT, I have to say that since then, they have been great. Their customer service reps are, if nothing else, VERY kind. They are kind to me and, really really kind to her. I am grateful.
