Problems solved
May. 22nd, 2002 02:21 pmSo several weeks ago my credit union mailed me a new ATM card. I took it off the mailer, looked at the one in my wallet, saw that it had an expiration date (which I hadn't realized), cut up the old one and put the new one in the wallet.
A couple of days later I went to a machine to get cash. It did not like my new card. A few phone calls later I discovered that the new card did not carry the PIN number of the old one. My two choices were drive to the nearest branch - 30 minutes of heavy traffic away or wait for them to mail me a new PIN. I picked mail. 8-10 business days.
Now I'm running out of cash. And, I'm leaving town on Saturday. Need cash. Finally today I remembered to look in my files and see if I had a PIN number for one of my credit cards. VOILA! Found one for the VISA. Off to the ATM and it worked! Cash! Then I ran to the computer, logged onto the credit union site and transferred the money from checking to VISA to cover the cash so I wouldn't run into interest charges. All in all, I'm feeling pretty smart. And, I'm still waiting for the ATM card PIN number... grrrr
Later: After I wrote this, I thought maybe I had outfoxed myself. How is the credit union going to know that the $200 I transferred into the VISA account is to cover the cash advance? So I called. Sure enough, while most credit card companies have one set of rules of cash advances - i.e. the interest starts immediately on cash advances but not on goods purchased, my credit union does not. I didn't even need to do that. I could have waited until the card payment was due. Oh well. I've got the cash and that's what matters.
