Mom and her icons
Jun. 2nd, 2002 08:53 amMy Mom managed to unplug her computer speakers yesterday and can't get them plugged back in. The cord dropped behind and under the desk. The last time she tried to get under there she very nearly couldn't get out. She's not that nimble an 80 year old.
Several months ago, I found a retired guy in Charleston who has a business of helping people with their computers. Most of his clients are elderly and he spends most of his time fixing what their son, daughter, niece, etc. 'fixed' on their computers. He keeps very busy. Mom and I had him and his wife over to dinner while I was there last week and they are both just delightful. While I can fix all of Mom's software problems from here (3,000 miles away) via PCAnywhere, I can't get under her desk to rescue the cord. So I sent him an email. I asked him to drop by next time he was in the neighborhood - he's out there about every day. He responded that he'd get her hooked back up today. What a nice guy.
Mom has a 13 year old granddaughter - my sister's oldest - who now has email. Emma sent Mom an email with a smiley face in it and Mom wanted to add fun graphics to her email back. So while I was out there, I found this great site of little smiley faces and other fun icons. Her grandchildren all call her Monkey and I found a little dancing Monkey which delighted her no end. I typed out step by step instructions about how to get them into email. She sat down and sent out a rash of email with the dancing Monkey but I wasn't sure she really got it about how add other ones. But, yesterday I got a note with a laughing face and a heart with a grin on it. I think she's got 'it'.
