credit card fraud
Jul. 20th, 2002 12:31 pmI set up my Mom so she could check her credit card balance online. She charges everything on her Visa which is a USAir Miles Visa run by Bank of America. The trust people pay the bill but she's really really good about checking it every day or so to make sure no bogus charges on are on it. And, she's had a few - one last week. She called and told them to take it off. When she went this morning to see if they did, she couldn't get on. So... email to me.
I tried, and, sure enough, not only would it not take the userid and password, there was this evil message saying that after 3 tries, they would block access. So I called. I know better than to tell them I am calling on behalf of my mother so I put on my old lady voice and called as her. I had a lot of info about the account but the guy on the phone started asking me questions like the credit limit and the amount of the last payment and I didn't know that because I didn't have a copy of the bill. Then he asked me for the address on the account and I totally forgot that we had changed the address to the Trust people. Once I got the address wrong he would not tell me one other thing. He offered to transfer me to the verification department but other than that, he was not giving me any other information. He knew he had a crook on his hands. I was beginning to hear sirens of the cops on my tail.
So I got all the info and tried again. This time I had the little old lady voice nailed and all of the info and a nice lady on the other end and it took about 3 minutes to get it all fixed. She changed the password and I was able to log back on and change it back. All is fine. And, the bogus charge had been refunded. And I am sure that her credit card is in the right hands should anyone ever try to take it over!
