Back in the olden days, when we performed for ourselves or for our friends - whether we were Dionne Warwick or one of the Temptations or any of their ilk. we sang right into our hair brushes. (At my house we tied the brushes onto broomsticks when floor mikes were needed.)

I was watching 60/II/20-20/Dateline or one of them and saw a piece about Gladys Knight. She's got one of those mikes that you wear on your head that whip around in front of your mouth. I hate the way they look but I think that's probably just because I'm old, cranky and set in my ways.

But, I really do wonder what the kids use today instead of a hairbrush? Do they fashion something out of pipe cleaners (are there even any pipe cleaners around any more??) or - horrors - do without?

I remember years ago my niece, age about 4 wanted to play 'store' so she smoothed out my lap and proceeded to wave her toys over it and making a high pitched 'beep' sound every time. It took me a while to figure out what in the hell she was doing! She'd never seen a store without a scanner.

But, back to those uggy looking new-fangled microphones - have they rendered the hairbursh obsolete?

Well, now you mention it I haven't seen one in a while. Then again I haven't been involved in any juvenile crafts projects for a while, and I suppose pipe smokers still need something to clean their pipes.

Or were pipe cleaners ever used to clean pipes? Maybe they're like duct tape, which doesn't actually work on ducts.

Aren't you too old to be worrying about what the kids do?

It's amazing...isn't it? I'll never forget..I was working the evening shift at the hospital..back in the late 80's maybe early 90's..and omg..at me typing that..ok 1980's, 1990's...anyway, he he he
The Housekeeping Supervisor..a very sharp black man, whose name escapes me right now...Larry, I think..
came around for the normal "shift check of empty rooms that needed to be cleaned." He checked the counter paperwork. (at the time, I was the Floor Supervisor..and in charge of admitting/discharging and noting bed availability on our Cancer floor)

Larry is standing there, ticking off rooms and checking with me...when all of a sudden, 2 doctors and a nurse emerge from the hallway bickering and sputtering..whispering, clearly some dispute was transpiring...they herded down another hall..way too loudly.
I looked up at Larry, from my desk under the counter..and he looked down at me. He then picked up my big Gray Stapler, and held the big end up to his mouth, declaring LOUDLY...

"And We'll be Right BACK" (imitating Oprah Winfrey)

I laughed for months after that, every time I saw him, and so did he. :))
Back then, Oprah had semi-jerry springer type shows, in case you're wondering about my sense of humor. That was exactly how she went into commercials afer intense family/relationship segments.

Guess you had to be there, but seeing you post about broomsticks and hairbrushes, made me recall that funny moment.

oh and the kids now..they just use headsets, and jump all over the stage.
Except Celine Dion..I rather enjoy seeing someone gripping a microphone tightly and singing.

I know my youngest is planning on participating in a talent show and was disappointed that they didn't have the wireless headset mics at the technologically advanced swap meet. At karaoke, she sings into the real hand-held thing.

But I remember several years ago at Toys R Us, must've been a BIG several years. Because one of my kids got a "Spice Girls" wireless headset mic for her birthday. The things cost about 10 bucks, and you set them to broadcast over the radio. They were only 10 bucks because the batteries weren't the sort that could be replaced. But yeah, they seem to expect the cordless headset kind now. Makes it easier to sing and do the choreography at the same time.

Oh, and instead of pipe cleaners, which are no longer PC, kids today know exactly what you're talking about when you say "chenille stems." Pipe cleaners were cheaper, though they didn't come in as many colors and were a bit rougher.
