My Mom wrote last night to ask me why she never got any junk email. "Does nobody love me?" Her friends all complain - they are subscribers to AOL, Compuserv, WebTV... She subscribes to Comcast and really does not ever at all get any spam. (Neither she or her friends ever post to newsgroups or other places where spammers routinely pick up email addresses.)

I, on the other hand, get enough for both of us. I subscribe to a service that scrubs most of the spam from my email before download. It collects it all on a website so I can review it. A couple of times a day I go in and delete it all. I am just constantly amazed as the volume. Last night I cleared it out and this morning when I checked, there was another huge batch. Here is a list of the subject lines from each of the pieces of spam that my email address received in the last 12 hours.

An amazing amout of spam for just 12 hours. I normally receive about 25 to 30 pieces a day and I thought that was a lot.

Yeah... Part of it is due to the fact that I don't generally hide my email address and I get anything and everything that comes in to susandennis.com. I've had the domain now for so long, it's on every list in the world. Weekends are the worst. Generally a 12 hour period is about half of this.

What? No spam for TEEN PEE SITES? When I had AOL I used to get those a lot. Now I am paranoid whenever I use a public restroom. Although they probably don't want olde geezers like me. THANK GOODNESS, eh?

I don't get much spam. I think it's because I use an obscure local isp. And my website is through that isp too. I also have an email address through mindspring, mainly for travel and so my kids can have email addresses wherever they are, and that one gets quite a lot of spam - but nothing like what you get.

It's getting uglier, that's certain. I think the popup ads on websites are the worst. I use Norton's internet security in part because it has a popup eliminator.

Under Washington law you are entitled to a private right of action to pursue statutory damages of $500.00 per spam message plus legal expenses through a Washington State court. Information about the Washington law can be found at: http://www.wa.gov/ago/clearinghouse/consumer/junkemail/home.html. I have form letters I send to these guys demanding $400 damages to settle out of court. I used to get tons of spam. Now it's down to about one per week.

Wow... congrats on your success! When they first passed the law, I gave it a spin but soon realized that it took far more energy than I was willing to give it. The service I use to filter my spam out also enables me to report it all. So I feel like I'm at least doing something to help the cause.

yeah...it did take a lot of effort at first, but I have automated most of it. And the return isn't that great. Now and then you can panic one into paying. Most just run scared and cross their fingers hoping it's a bluff, but I never hear from them again and it usually gets me off the original mailing list as well. I have thought of setting up a spam block on my mail server but I guess I am having to much fun fighting back.
