When I first put together the plan for Mom's 80th birthday, I realized it was going to be a bit of a challenge from 3,000 miles away to a place where businesses are a bit slow to pick up on the whole email trend. I think a lot of Charleston, SC is waiting to see if the internet is going to catch on or not but that's another deal.

Anyway, last time I was there, I scouted around and turned up the name of a woman who has a new business of helping old people. Her Mom lived (before she died a couple of years ago) where my Mom lives now. And Polly figured out that the people there and their families might well like to pay someone to help do stuff. Like move. Or ship things. Or get their hair done. Or find nurses. Or organize a 80th birthday party. And Polly had an email address (AOL but it was still email and I was grateful.)

I popped her off a note telling her what I wanted - a limo, reservations, everything handled and planned ahead of time. I want my Mom and her chums to be whisked away like royalty and not even have to take a purse - ok so not royalty like Queen Liz but the kind of royalty who don't have purses, but I digress.

Anyway, Polly wrote back with some good suggestions of how to proceed and that she'd give me a hand for $35 which I thought was way too low a price but I gleefully sent her a check fast. She has been great. There have been a couple of snafus with the limo company that have caused her to spend more time than she should have dealing with them, but she picked them so I'm not feeling too guilty about that.

I get these hilarious emails from her. It's so clear that she is my kind of woman. She gets to the point and the point is good and she shares my enthusiasm and my frustration when needed and never ever sends me an email without saying at least once and maybe twice that I should not worry - that she gurantees that Mom and her friends will have a perfect evening.

And you know what? I think they will. Mom is getting her hair done tomorrow and her nails done Friday and she has a new outfit. I think she's really getting into this. She says that she's only going to be 80 once. Whatever.
