I grew up when the Top 40 was just the Top 10 and those 10 were on 45 RPM records and stacked more often referred to your pile of 45's rather than your breasts (and we never said the word breast outloud when there were boys around). Lipstick on Your Collar and Look, Look, My Heart is an Open Book were hot on the charts and we knew every single word (and still, sadly, do).

I'm not a music person. I just don't have that gene. So I don't have a fancy stereo or MP3 player. But, the songs of my teens are not really music they are like comfort food and [livejournal.com profile] estis made me realize I could get some. He kept mentioning his downloading of oldies but goodies. And, finally, yesterday, I had had enough. I had to figure out how to do it and get some for me.

I have a wonderful, local ISP. They are great in every way except their news feed sucks. I usually use Google or a free feed for reading of usenet groups. So it took me a long time and Estis's help to figure out that every newsfeed I was looking at had stripped out the MP3's. But, in the process I did find some nice software for downloading and picked up some other info.

This morning I signed up for a $6.00 a month news server. I get four different news servers and I can cancel at any time. And now I have MP3's. I Want To Be Bobby's Girl (our songs lacked a bit of subtlety back then), was my first download. What great fun.

Then I discovered that some software that came with my PC, translates the MP3's into WAV's when it puts them onto CD's. Very cool. I feel like I am in with the in crowd. Finally.
