Mom had a doctor's appointment this afternoon. She's been going a lot recently, like every couple of days and I thought it was for her bursitis but I was wrong. I drove her today and was patiently playing Collapse on my Treo in the waiting room when the nurse called out my name and said the doctor wanted to see me! I do not do doctors so I was not happy.

I found out later that Mom had mentioned I was there and he asked if he could talk to me. Anyway, he told me that she has massive heart failure. He kind of said that he's not at all sure how and why she is even still alive. He's been screwing with her drugs trying to find a combo that will keep her alive and he said it's a guess. He said that her heart rate stays too high to maintain and the drugs to keep it down keep her from breathing. He told her to come in tomorrow. She said she would after she took me to the airport. He gave me a look like 'no fucking way should she take you to the airport.' He said that his battle of trying to keep her alive was hampered by her not telling him everything and pulling stunts like driving to the airport.

So we came home and I called a taxi service. She was not happy but I told her that I was not going to tell her how to run her life but that I had been looking for an excuse to prevent her trips to the airport for a long time and now that I had one I was going to use it.

This is why it takes her forever to take a few steps. Her heart is just not working right.

For just the teensiest bit this evening she sounded depressed and said she didn't want to be an invalid. I told her that taking it easy and learning little tricks like planning for rest and resting and using a motorized scooter would keep her from feeling like an invalid. And that was the last I was going to say about it. She said ok and thank you and she did sound ok. I do think she's ready for me to go so she can see if she can really get along on her own under these new conditions.

She's not planning on dying - she ordered $300 worth of clothes from Orvis this afternoon - so I think she'll give it her best. And her doctor does seem to care an awful lot.

And I'm the world's worse nurse and I'm ready to go home. Plus the Mariners are playing in Seattle which means the game doesn't even start until 10p.m. here and that just sucks.
