Thanks to everyone who contributed to my thinking yesterday. I am still very grateful that no one ruined the Pink Prom, but I also now really believe that the protest of the protest was fair and right as well. I never believed it wasn't important. I know it is.
The one comment that really clarified the whole thing for me was posted anonymously. I appreciate it so much. It really answered my own questions for me. So that it does not get lost down there in comments, I'm repeating it here:The meeting in the stadium and the gay prom night are two very different kinds of events. The first is designed to stir up people to take action to restrict the rights of another, very specific group of people. Protesting this kind of public gathering is completely appropriate. The second is not a political meeting like the first, but a private one to celebrate an achievement in a few individuals' lives.
Gay protesters do not appear outside church services where people have come together to worship in a way that they see fit and to enjoy their personal religious freedom. However, the moment members of those churches decide to take political action to impose their views on society they become fair game for public protests.
Thank you, whoever you are.
