The worst of the heat, that is. It has been marvelously cool in the mornings and not even too hot in the afternoons. It's not cool at night but it's not terrible either. Jake has even come back to sleep on the bed with me. I think I can put the mister away since I don't think I'll be having to mist myself down to fall asleep. I'll probably hold off until Labor Day weekend on putting the air conditioner away - just to be safe. But, I really think that the hot is gone. Whew.

Polly sent a note last night that she dropped by on Mom and delivered the long distance calling card I asked her to pick up. She said Mom was dressed and in a chair eating dinner while chatting with a dietitian. And that Mom looked much better than she had the day before.

The Mariners pounded the crap out of Kansas City last night. But, you know what? It wasn't that much fun. Kansas City has one of the few teams in Major League Baseball with a worse record than the Mariners. And you could really see why last night. One of their players got hit by a ball - thrown by his teammate... he just couldn't get out of the way. Their pitcher got hit in the face by the hand/glove of the first baseman on another play. Dropped balls, bobbled balls... it was just a mess. Not a fun victory at all.

How bad is this season? I hate that the Mariners can't win and now I hate when they do?

I get ideas for books to read from everywhere. People send me emails. I get them from People Magazine, from the book section of the newspaper, from some mailing lists I'm on... everywhere. These days, when I see a book that looks interesting, I hop onto the library website and request a copy. Often by the time I actually get my hands on the book, I've totally forgotten where I heard about it and sometimes even why I thought it was interesting.

This week I picked up a book called "On Call - A doctor's days and nights in residency" by Emily R. Transue. Since I don't read a whole lot of non-fiction and I pretty much confine my medical exposure to ER on TV, I'm at a loss as to why I thought this would be interesting. But, I started reading it on the bus yesterday and I'm hooked. Turns out she did her residency in Seattle and is now an internist in Seattle. I know that someday I am going to have to see a doctor about something so maybe this book will give me a little insight into what it's like on the other end of the stethoscope.

I just got an email that my ceiling leak is getting fixed tomorrow. About six months (or more - I can't even remember) ago, I discovered water droplets on my coffee table. It took a bit of sleuthing but I discovered they were coming from the ceiling. There had been a crack up there since the earthquake in 2001. The earthquake repair people had patched it kind of. But now there was water coming from the patched up crack. Sweet.

Micah, the Stepford Building Manager, came up and looked at it right away - worked hard to find the problem (it never leaked again) - asked about it nearly every week (most of the time I had forgotten to even look) and asked if it was ok to wait until the end of Summer to fix it (fine by me). This morning he sent an email asking if he could fix it tomorrow - apologizing for the late notice. He's so good and nice and considerate and efficient, it's nearly creepy.
