The first thing I heard this morning was NPR telling me that Mom had a new hurricane - Gilbert is passing through Charleston now. Fab... Like she doesn't have enough stresses... I got up and checked the computer and there was a note from my brother (who heard NPR say the same thing but three hours earlier). He said she didn't have electricity and she had heard nothing about evacuation and was ok.

So I made my daily call. She didn't know what time it was - clocks area all electric. So I told her. She didn't know if my sister had gotten home yet. At least my sister had the sense not to call her in the middle of the night.

(Her husband, a 55 year old school teacher who should have a bit of sense, called Mom night before last at 10:30 pm - Mom said 'he didn't know about the time change and just wanted to say hi'... To the best of my knowledge he's never ever once called her for any reason before... I think maybe we're circling around the old inheritance here. Note to Teacher: The will is already done - you share your wife's third - no late night phone calls are going to change that - plus there's not as much as you think there is anyway.)

Anyway, Mom was ok and not unhappy and not too interested in chatting. She asked about the ballgames yesterday and I was getting ready to tell her about the rest of my day when she said 'Thanks for calling. I'll call you or your brother if they evacuate us.' Ok... What. Ever.

It's not really hot so I did a short walk today. It was nice. They are setting up to shoot a video in the plaza in front of the football stadium. A notice in our elevator says it will involve more than 2,000 motorcyclists. The riders, themselves - not their bikes. So far all we have is the stage and sound set up. The bikers must be coming later.

And I owe another thank you to [livejournal.com profile] wbahner. The Mariners won the first game of yesterday's double header and then, in 12 innings, went on to win the second one. Neither was on TV so I listened to about 8 hours of baseball yesterday. And it was pretty good - well, well-matched - baseball. We have one fabulous broadcast announcer and when you hear him on radio you can really appreciate someone who is very nearly perfect at his craft. It was fun.

Today is baseball, laundry, hurricane watch, TV, Netflix... The usual!
