I majored in Communications in college. I did that because, at the time, there were no women in the department and being lazy I figured I could mini-skirt my way to a degree. Which I pretty much did. BUT, I still had to take some courses and some of them required you to attend classes. One of those classes was statistics. [I just discovered - an hour after this entry went 'live' that a typo made this paragraph kind of silly. There were ONLY men in department not 'no men' as it read originally.]

It was taught by Dr. Wu who was, I'm sure, a lovely man but one who was clearly put on this earth to serve as student bait. He had a very very strong Chinese accent and never once cracked a smile. (Ok, statistics isn't one of your more humorous courses even on a good day, but really in a whole semester there's bound to be at least one smiley thing.)

He did, however, produce miles and wads and caverns of giggles. To start with, he pronounced Statistics as Study Sticks. How can you go wrong there? To this day, I can't hear or see the word without thinking about Dear Dr. Wu and his sticks.

All of this is preamble - (mainly because, I'm clock watching here and trying to entertain myself) a study stick I read this morning in one of my mailing lists:

The average male applying for a job will apply if they have about 40% of the "required" job qualifications, and not feel in any way nervous about it. The average female will not apply unless they have around 100% of the qualifications, and then will proceed to dwell upon their shortcomings in the interview.

I have nothing to cite here and it may be totally bogus but I'll bet it's not. I was taught early on that "having" a particular skill can also mean "having the ability to pick it up really really fast". So I'm not immune to saying "yes, I can do that" if I know that given a good book or a set of instructions, I would be able to.

But...

I was just asked to review a job description. I read it over and realized that it was way over my head - I didn't even understand what some of the 'required' skills and process were. So I asked what the description is for. "It's a description of what you do. We need to hire another one of you and it's what I'm sending to the agency." Doh!
