I've written before about Marshall Chapman. She went to high school with me and then went on to be a country singer of some note but a country song writer of even more note. She wrote a book this past year about her life. The book was really interesting to me since she and I grew up at exactly the same time in about the same spot in the South with the same rules and regulations that have long ago (fortunately) been abandoned. We went to a female finishing school that is still there but with an entirely different vision (fortunately).

Anyway, Bob Edwards interviewed Marshall this morning on Morning Edition. It was funny to hear her speaking voice after all these years. She and I have not kept in touch. She was too cool before she got semi-famous. I was lower on the totem pole.

NPR has the unedited version of the interview on their website and I just listened to all 40 some odd minutes of it. Really interesting at least to me. She has the same semi-ambiguous feelings about that prep school that I do. She says it took years of therapy to get over it. But, then, she says, seriously, it was a great education and after that college was a no-brainer. And she's right.

It's just strange, after all these years to hear my 'old friend' Bob Edwards chatting with my 'old friend' Marshall Chapman. What's the audio version of a voyeur?

I met Marshall here in Atlanta a year or so ago. She came with Ashley Cleveland (http://www.Ashleycleveland.com) to play at Hollow at the Swallow (http://www.Hollowattheswallow.com). Nashville songwriters who play at the Blubird Cafe come down to play here in Atlanta periodically. Swallow is a hole in the wall BBQ place with great food and great music. Marshall has great story music. I bought a CD she recorded at a women's prison in Tennessee. She is one interesting character! I would love to read her book.....and I'll look up the interview. Cool!

An "auditeur"?

What a coincidence! I had never heard of Marshall Chapman before yesterday, when I woke up to her interview on NPR. I was entranced by her deep, throaty voice. I'm not at all familiar with her music - I may have to check it out.
