It's off to work I go
Jan. 18th, 2006 08:25 amOk, I'm showered and dressed in something other than sweats and prepared to go spend the day away from here.
Well... turns out... there's more than one or two people who were surprised by this. Several said they were surprised that the filter didn't disintegrate. Their dish washers must be WAY better than mine. I can hardly get food to disintegrate off the dishes, much less whole items. Another mentioned being very cautious about not washing anything that wasn't labeled 'dishwasher safe'. ??? With the exception of Jake and Betty, I'm not sure I own anything that is not dishwasher safe but I never look at any labels to find out. (And, btw, Jake and Betty had better keep up with their self cleaning or we will be testing them as well...)
But what really cracked me up were the people who were clearly bothered about having the filter in with their dirty dishes and then eating off the dishes. Ok, their dish washers must be SO bad that you gotta wonder why bother to use them! I think food safety is a good idea but I also think as with so much else, the extremes are nuts.
My New Zealand friend, Scott, takes 3-5 day hikes and packs his food. He often takes meat and never worries about the lack of refrigeration. When I asked him about it once he said that he had built up what he likes to think of as bacterial immunity from just doing this for years. And that in the days before refrigeration was common, people ate what today would be considered 'old' meat and lived to tell about it.
Neither one of my grandmothers believed in refrigerating eggs. They kept them in a bowl on the kitchen counter. They both died of non-bad egg related old age as did their husbands.
Some caution is smart but really... I just don't think that a Roomba filter washed with dishes is worth worrying about. I'm glad I didn't tell them that I also pop my hair brush into the silverware basket, yes, with the silverware in there, too...
