I do not like or appreciate being grouped in with everyone else in someone's address book and then being the recipient of some piece of news, humor, political opinion or whatever they think of to share. If I request... If I send you a note saying - please feel free to send me whatever crap you think I might want to see... Then, all bets are off. Send everything.
BUT, if I do not make such a specific request PLEASE confine your emails to those from you alone to me alone. (I will make an exception of emails announcing an address change.) Long time friends do it. Some LJers do it. Some people I've never met but who maybe sent me one note and I responded do it. I don't know why. But I wish they would stop.
And, if I ask, as nicely as I know how, for you to please please please take me off your list of group emails, then understand that is not a request for just the next week or next month, it is for fucking ever!
I just got two 'cute' emails - both start out with - "I hardly ever forward things like this but I thought you'd enjoy it..." I have asked both of these people before to exclude me from their list. I just asked again and got a note back saying "Oh I really hardly ever send you stuff but I really thought you'd like this... really!" Well, really, NO NO NO!
Two things really do puzzle me. One is what in the world did I ever do or say that gives anyone the impression that this kind of thing would not piss me off royally? And why does getting these things piss me off royally?

Date: 2003-12-30 11:49 am (UTC)On really rare occasions someone will send me something - a link to a web site, usually - that I actually do like. That doesn't mean that I want to put up with all the other stuff, though.
I have been successful in one thing: the virus hoaxes. Now, almost everyone who writes to me will ask me to check one of those out or will actually go to the trouble to figure out if it's a hoax before sending it on. Yay!! Small victory.

Date: 2003-12-30 01:24 pm (UTC)I have had folks get overly offended, and stop sending to me all together, but those folks are never the ones that matter to me anyway.
The thing I hate most (well, maybe) is that SOMEONE on that list with you will press "reply to all," so now my address is in THEIR book too, whoever the heck they are. With viruses like Klez, who randomly selected address from your list ... well, who needs 'em?

Date: 2003-12-30 03:32 pm (UTC)Because it puts my email address out there for people that I don't know and who are often times not intelligent and save the address to their address books, and then I become a unwitting and pissed off virus recipient. Also there are often times people on that list whom I don't *want* to have my email address, or *that* particular email address. I don't know if that makes any sense to you or not, but that's my reasoning.

Date: 2003-12-30 04:19 pm (UTC)Thank god there is someone out there who understands me..I always have people who look at me oddly or think I'm crazy when I explain how I don't appreciate them sending me emails in a list format, but would rather have it sent to me specifically.
