Fire in the hole
Jul. 15th, 2006 02:11 pmThe place where Mom lived has a nice little newsletter that comes out every month. It's got news and gossip and who's who and who'd died and who's got a birthday... She decided I needed to get a copy in the mail every month. She'd find the person in charge and they'd promise to send it and I'd never get it. They made each issue available online for a month so I'd just get it there. But this was not good enough for her. Every months she'd ask and when I told her that I hadn't gotten it, she'd go pester someone else. Someone would promise, but it never came. This went on for the last two years of her life.
She died in March. I got my first in-the-mail issue in April. And, apparently, there is no way to stop them from coming. I gave it a shot and gave up. The July issue arrived today and while I was waiting for something, I flipped through it and caught the big news.
A couple of weeks ago they had a fire!! The place has free standing cottages, apartments for independent living, assisted living, and then a nursing section. The fire was in the apartment (where Mom and Dad lived when they first moved in). The newsletter didn't mention exactly where but apparently a bad lamp wire caught some curtains on fire. Someone spotted flames immediately and the only real damage was to one of the apartments.
But, you gotta know it was the talk of the town for days and days and days. I was thinking just now that if Mom were still alive, I'll bet you a Krispy Kreme franchise that her email this morning would be bitching about when in the world were they ever going to talk about anything other than the fucking fire!! I do miss her emails.
