No boobies for baby

susandennisOk so here goes - childhood memories - probably I'll slap one on most entires until I run out. Or, I'll just slip one in here and there. Like now.
We lived in Kansas City, MO. We moved there when I was 3 (1952) and we left there when I was in the middle of the first grade (1955).
The people across the street had a white house. For some reason we called them the Whitehouses... as in Mrs. Whitehouse, Mr. Whitehouse... I don't know why we didn't use their real name. They had two daughters my age and their mother and mine were pregnant. I was over playing at the Whitehouses after their new baby was born and saw her nursing the baby. I had never seen that before. I asked my mother about that and she said that Mrs. Whitehouse was giving her baby milk. My Tiny Tears baby doll came with a bottle like my brother drank from. BUT, heck, Mrs. Whitehouse could be on to something... so I nursed Tiny Tears. Until my mother walked in on me and had what I did not have the vocabulary to describe then but was an absolute major shit fit. It really upset me. I couldn't not understand what the deal was and Mom was NOT in the question answering mode. I learned never to do that again but I had no idea why.
And a bonus...
We had a TV. It was one of those giant cabinet models with a tiny screen. In the living room. There was not much programming. In fact, on weekdays, you got the test pattern until about 3 p.m. But there was a decent amount of kids programming. Pinky Lee was one of my favorite shows. One day I was watching and Pinky Lee clutched his chest and fell over and the picture went black and then there were words on the screen. I couldn't read yet so I had to go get mother. She wouldn't come read it. I begged her and begged her until she finally did and told me that Pinky Lee was not coming back. It was 1955. I vowed that I would learn to read ASAP cause Mom was just too cranky to depend on.
