The day my brother saved my ass
Jul. 16th, 2006 09:28 amThat day would be today! Nope, not a childhood memory.
Yesterday when I replied to his weekly 'how things went this week' note, I mentioned my two websites that went live this week (one of them was MS's Small Business Server which he and several of his customers use http://www.microsoft.com/sbs). And I gave him a link to the Desktop Search one (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/desktopsearch). Well, turns out this morning while in the shop waiting for the floor cleaning guys, he clicked on the link and figured out that this might be something that would be good for looking up shit in Outlook (which is really is) so he followed the 'download now' links...
And, he found two BIG problems (plus one of those was also two problems)! I had totally forgotten to copy two critical files from the staging server to the live one... Plus, the download instructions included some vestigial wording. But the critical thing was that the point of the fucking website it is to highlight the two programs to download and it was not possible to download either one! Holey crap!
I can't believe none of us even bothered to check this. But, tomorrow and Tuesday there are two big conferences with real customers and there will be major focus on these pages and the problems would have shrieked out at my client. And hens around the world would have been exhausted from producing all the egg that would have been on my face. Holey fucking moley.
Whew. I'm shell shocked at what could have been. Thankgod for my baby brother!
