black out

So... I got up early this morning. Read the paper. Hopped into the shower. Got dressed. The plan was to get a good start on work and wait for the microwave fixit guy who was due between 8-noon. But, first, let's check LJ.

I was right at [livejournal.com profile] howeird's map of Morgan Hill when the power went out. I mean all of it.

The women who turned the old warehouse into what is now my condo building created a dual power grid. The back half of my house is on one power supply and the front half is on another. So while I have lost power in one or the other occasionally, never - in 15 years - have I lost power in both.

None in the hall. It's still early and I could see street lights in the neighborhood still on. Except on my block. I open the door to the hall and hear someone - it's the guy down the hall coming in. He tells me that the whole block is out.

I fire up the Lifebook and the cellphone and connect to get the GE number where in an amazingly few number punches and no human interaction, I am able to reschedule the microwave guy to next week. (That really was incredible.)

I grabbed my laptop and headed down to one of the coffee shops - there are a half dozen within a few blocks but the best is a one off that has free wi fi, electrical outlets and elbow room. Their pastries suck but that's a nit.

So... here I am. Two guys next to me are from the building across the street from mine and they said that the area down to about Safeco was out. They were pinging their external servers for updates. About the time I got set up, they said the power had come back but not the elevators. So I ordered coffee and got a scone that was miss labeled. It said 'orange currant' but should have been labeled Arizona Desert.

The guy on the other side of me just said that the Starbucks headquarters was also out. 1. They are a good mile or more down the hill and 2. How much do I love that two guys from Starbucks headquarters blew off the two Starbucks' on either ends of this block for the indy coffee shop in the middle. (I'm pretty sure that the wi fi in our Starbucks is not free.)

Ahhh a little adventure in the morning!! I did spend some cycles on the way over here being grateful that I had gotten up early and gotten showered and could use my cellphone as a modem and had easy free wi fi so close. The whole thing could have been a ten times greater pain the ass.

I guess I'll piddle a little more and finish my coffee and head on home.
